Show Range Land Development Seminar THe Utah State Department Depart-ment of Agriculture and the Utah Endowment for the Humanities will be presenting a seminar on rangeland and showing the film "Within Range.": The seminar will be held Tuesday, Jan. 16 at 1 p.m. at the Cedar City Chamber of Commerce Building. "Within Range" was produced jointly by the two organizations, the public is invited to attend the meeting. The objectives of the film and seminar are: first, to show the conflicts faced by farmers and ranchers as they try to maintain a viable agricultural enterprise. Second, emphasize the close human ties associated with the family farm and acquaint people with some of the problems which have caused farm families to seek another way of life. Third, generate interest and support for rangeland development, which is one of Utah's basic natural resources. Because range management and der-velopment der-velopment is expensive, the Utah State Legislature createrd Utah's Rangeland Development Fund to aid in improvement of private and puclic rangelands at no interest rate. This fund is managed by the Utah State Department of Agriculture with local help from the soil conservaton districts and the Soil Conservation Service. Ser-vice. Livestock production is the heart of Utah's agricultural economy, primarily due to the vast grazing potential of the rangeland resource. Livestock and livestock products contribute over 73 percent of our total agriculture income. Approximately Ap-proximately 86 percent of . the state's 52 million acres is ' classified as rangeland. The proper use and development of our range is critical as a source of water, wildlife habitat, livestock forage, scenery and recreation. The conservation improvement and maintenance of our rangelands for present and future use is vitally important im-portant to all segments of our population. |
