Show Utah Symphony opens M usic Arts The 1977-78 Music Arts Season in Cedar City will open Tuesday, Oct. 8 with the annual appearance of the Utah Symphony Orchestra, it is announced by Barbara Hubbard, chairman of the sponsoring Cedar City Music Arts. The orchestra, under the baton of Ardean W. Watts, will concertize at the Cedar City High School Auditorium at 8:15 p.m. Efforts, are being made to complete the season ticket sales for the Music Arts prior to that time, Mrs. Hubbard stated. The concert, sponsored by the Cedar City Music Arts is assisted by a grant provided jointly by the Utah State Division of Fine Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts, Washington, D. C. Students from Southern Utah State College and from the Iron County Schools will be admitted free of charge. Season ticket patrons will be able to attend at a reduced rate on their season ticket offering. However, individual in-dividual tickets for the Symphony Concert will be on sale the evening of the concert, Mrs. Hubbard stated. Fresh from a highly successful tour of Europe the Utah Symphony returned to begin their annual concert tour in the Intermountain area. Their program in Cedar City will include Overature to "The Impressario" by Mozart; Symphony No. 1 in B flat Major, "Spring", by Schumann and Symphony No. 1 in E Minor by Sibelius. All are selections performed per-formed by the Internationally In-ternationally famous group on the recent European tour. Conducting the orchestra in the Cedar City appearance ap-pearance will be Ardean Watts. Watts is an accomplished ac-complished pianist and is adept on both clarinet and string bass. His first duty, of course, comes as associate conductor, a post that puts him on the podium for various concerts, musicals, opera, choral concerts and ballet. He serves as Principal Prin-cipal Conductor of Utah's Ballet West, with whom he lead s the "Nutcracker Ballet" each year in an annual production featuring the symphony. A native of Knosh Watts was raised in Idaho Falls, Idaho. He earned music degrees from the University of Utah and Brigham Young University, and has been a Utah Symphony member for 15 years. He also studied in Vienna, Austria. He founded the Utah Opera Company, where he acts as Artistic Director, and he teaches music at the University of Utah. |
