The outpouring out-pouring of iun seekers, pick-nickers pick-nickers and campers turns highways and recreation areas including Duck Creek Campgrounds, Camp-grounds, into a churning mass of moving humanity. This year the National Safety Council will inssue its deadly predictions - with its usual deadly accuracy. Hundreds will die as they always al-ways do. Those who plan to travel over the Labor Day should be mindful of the grim statistics and of the fact that most accidents are the result of sheer carelessness or thoughtlessness. If you plan to join in Labor Day fun and games as a way cf bidding adieu to a summer that has been all too short, just remember that a new season sea-son is just beginning. Autumn is one of the most beautiful times of the year try to stick around to enjoy it. , The Sentinel-Echo of London, Lon-don, Ky. has reflected on the shrinking of the dollar. The editor suggests that if the size of a dollar bill had been decreasing commensurate with its value since 1930, it would be about as large as a calling call-ing card now, and at its present pre-sent rate of decreasing, by I960 I9-60 it would be about the size of a postage stamp. A little meandering this week with some information that I hope will at least be interesting. in-teresting. For instance did you know that our Post Office in Cedar City is showing some steady growth, at least in the area of the amount of business conducted con-ducted and funds handled? Postmaster Frank Petty reports re-ports that total receipts for the post office for the year ending June 30 amounted to $254,426.89, which does not include in-clude Money Orders sold, but does include fees charged for money orders. A total of 7,002 money orders were sold during dur-ing the year totaling $192,993.-06 $192,993.-06 which does not include the fees. Petty also reports that 21 are currently employed at the Post Office plus rural route su1. and the estimated payroll pay-roll before deduct ions amounts t0 $177,670. The postmaster is also proud of the record concerning the utilization of vehicles in the distribution of mail. He reports re-ports that the vehicles were driven for a total of 9,025 hours and an estimated 17,200 miles. "During this time we had only one accident - that was an extremely minor accident ac-cident at that." Further the report indicates that $2,388.75 was withheld from payrolls for the purchase . of U.S. Savings Bonds. Of the 21 employees 15 have requested request-ed deductions for this purpose. pur-pose. .. We are to the point of the year where the familiar question ques-tion is asked "Where has the summer gone?" The opening of school in Iron County is just around the corner August 24. It's one of those middle of the week openings open-ings that has been set to meet the requirements of 180 days of school. That will be followed fol-lowed closely by the Labor Day Weekend. With the ending of the dog days of late summer, the pace of life quickens and the business busi-ness of a new season must get started. Perhaps it is this awareness that the fleeting moment we call summer is nearly passed is what gives |
