Show Iron County Rest Home resident raises fine vegetable garden; does it hard way 1 rest home in Parowan 14 months ago. He was born and i raised in Clarkston, Utah. His ex-wife still lives in Layton. He has eight children, 33 grandchildren, and 7 greatgrandchildren.- Now, wait a minute. He is also an artist and dabbles with sculpturing. In his room at the rest home is one or two fine pictures to show for his work, and according to him he is no where near done with his projects he is just going go-ing to "keep on going." j Did you know that the residents resi-dents of the Iron County Rest home here are now enjoying Ing a bounteous supply of garden produce, from a garden gar-den planted at the rear of the home by one of the residents. This writer was called there last week end to see the garden gar-den and visit with the gentleman gentle-man who produces it, and I enjoyed the visit very much. Leslie L. Clarke, who will turn 78 years in the coming January, inaugurated the project pro-ject early in the spring when he seen the big wasted area at the back of the home, and learned that there was a fine water right to go with it. He took a shovel and went to work, spading up the ground from day to day and planting it as it was made ready. He now has a lush garden, 70 by 100 feet square growing all the different differ-ent vegetables that can be grown in the Parowan area. The produce is used mostly in the dining-room of the rest home, although he gives some of it away in other places. Here Is what I seen growing grow-ing there, all well watered and clean from weeds: Corn, potatoes, pole beans, that you have to use a step ladder to pick; peas, ' beets, carrots, radishes, parsnips, squash, egg plant, cabbage, cucumbers, melons, cauliflower, cauliflow-er, tomatoes and peppers.. And I may have missed some. He is using the lawn cuttings cut-tings from the rest home lawn and weeds to make a compost pile for coming fertilizer. He also noticed that the water from the home cooling system, was running to waste, about 180 gallons an hour; he put this in a hose and distributes it around on his garden. Mr, Clarke is a retired Hill Field worker from which he retired at 65. He has lived in Layton for a number of years, and has lived in Panguitch, where he owns a home, for two years He came to the |
