Cedar Redmen lose battle to Dixie 59 to 58 in final seconds of play Cedar High School Redmen basketball quintet blew a 19 point first half lead and lost a squeaker to the Flyers of Dixie Dix-ie Friday night at St. George 59 to 58. The Redmen, led by Eric Marchant who wound up the evening with 27 points, jumped jump-ed off to an early commanding command-ing lead and looked as if to make it a complete run away. Midway in the second period the Redmen held a 27 to 8 lead and appeared to be coasting for an easy win. The Flyers, leaders in the Region Eight Class A race, had other ideas and with Scott Cannon after a slow start began to take control I game and again Dixie fouled with Brent Blackner stepping to the line with 21 seconds. He missed and the Flyers came down with Gary Esplin hitting a 15 footer from the side to put Dixie in the. lead at 59-58 with 14 seconds on the clock. The Redmen had one more chance at the 3 second mark when Rex Osborne, who played play-ed a wale of a game in a reserve re-serve capacity when Robin Haight fouled out, stepped to the line and missed the first of a one and one situation, third of its kind for the Red-men Red-men in the last 33 seconds. The buzzer sounded after the rebound and the Flyers were and his efforts Led the Hyers to an ultimate victory. At the halfway point the Redmen still had a ten point margin at 37 to 27 but it was a disasterous third period for the Redmen. They were held to just three points and at the end of the' period were actually actual-ly trailing by one at 41-40. Marchant again found the range in the fourth period, after af-ter failing to score in the third period and led the Redmen back out in front by as much as 6 points at 51-45, only to have the Flyers, scoring most-ly most-ly from the foul line and mostly most-ly by Cannon, again narrow the gap to take the game to the wire. With just a minute on the clock Tommy Cardon of the Redmen tanked a 20 footer to give the Redmen a three point lead at 58-55, but Cannon a-' gain hit two from the charity strip, his 13th and 14th of the evening, to narrow it to just one at 58-57. With 33 seconds remaining Randy Davis of the Redmen missed the first of a one and one on a foul made with the intention of regaining poses-sion poses-sion by the Flyers. But the Flyers missed and the Redmen again went into a control the victors. The Redmen oulscored the Flyers four from the field but Dixie made it up and one more in foul shots, mostly by Scott Cannon. Cannon had 18 shots from the charity line and connected con-nected on 14 and wound up the evening with 24 points. Only other Redman in double doub-le figures for the evening was Robin Haight who hit for 15.
