Show LETTERS TO THE EDITOR clusivoly for basketball. It is financially impossible to continue con-tinue a varied sports offering with increased cost and lowered low-ered revenues. It s not our desire to over burden our patrrons with charges for our activities; however, they cannot operate without cost. The board supports sup-ports our sports program heavily. We welcome your suggestions or criticism about our handling of this important import-ant issue. The phone number is 477-3732. At the time of this writing no one has called call-ed to discuss this particular problem with me. Respectfully, BRUCE Decker, Principal Parowan High School. made by the Board of education. educa-tion. The decision has been made, but Parowan has not yet had a home game to re-I'lect re-I'lect that decision. The board directed Parowan High School to charge $1.00 per adult admission. ad-mission. Since adult admissions admis-sions are not an issue in the other high schools we alone are directed to reduce admission admis-sion for adults. The other high schools in our district will continue to charge $1.25 for adult admssions. The Board reached this desicion as a result re-sult of complaints from some patrons of Parowan High. We have offered to parents of team members of any sports activity an opportunity to buy a season's pass for every sports offering. I am DEAR EDITOR: The athletic budget at the Parowan High School has been $1200 - $1500 in the red for more than seven years. During this time we have purchased pur-chased nek equipment each year for football, basketball, wrestling, track, baseball, tennis and golf. There is no broader sports offering in any Region Eight high school. We have also built an athletic storage building on the football foot-ball field from athletic receipts. re-ceipts. Income has not kept pace with ever increasing cost of maintaining, and replacing equipment for the number of sports activities that are offered. of-fered. It has been suggested that th board of education subsidies the athletic program. pro-gram. The bleachers on the football field were extensively overhauled and painted last fall at board expense. Matching Match-ing funds were used to purchase pur-chase a new wrestling mat. The board's amount was $2000.00; the high school's amount was $200.00. The cost of transporting athletic teams for contests away from home has always been paid by the district. The cost of officials for games in basketball are going to be subsidized by the Region Eight receipts from the region basketball tournament. The exact amount of this subsidy sub-sidy is as yet unknown. This is the first year that this has been tried. The adult admission charge of 75c for athletic contests went unchallenged for four years from 1963-67. During that period other schools of the region were charging $1.00 per adult admission. Some of the schools of the region are now charging $1.25 per adult admission. We are among the group of schools that have been doing this. Because of the concern of some of our patrons pa-trons the issue came to the attention of th superintendent. He directed that w. continue to charge $1.25 until such time as a decision could be sure tnose wno are lnieresta have plrchas.ed the pass. A letter went to each family involved. in-volved. The cost for this pdtss is $7.50 per parent. We make no apology for the opportunity that our boys have to participate in sports activities. Pr.3cidense is given to the necessity to keep boys supplied with equipment that is conducive to safety and self, respect. We would like boys to feel that their sports participation par-ticipation offers them an opportunity op-portunity to develop their ath-lectic ath-lectic talents. E.3ing a team member can also offer a boy tremendous insights as to th.3 American Way of Life. We be-lieva be-lieva that an unhealthy attitude atti-tude toward the true value of sports competition is fostered by encouraging the notion that basketball players earn morv?y for a school and that it owes them something of economic eco-nomic value in return. In reality re-ality the basketball team members enjoy the privilege of participating in th other seasonal sports that cost much more to sponsor and do not provide revenue to support sup-port themselves. This year around sports offering can exist ex-ist only if we use the revenue rather than spending it exclu-to exclu-to support the total program rather than spending it ex- - I EDITOR, Iron County Record, Cedar City, Utah.. DEAR EDITOR: I am a handicapped veteran, veter-an, living on a small pension. pen-sion. My vision and hearing are slowly leaving me. The doctors say they can do nothing, noth-ing, so I have made hobbies to keep busy and fight off per. iods of mental depression and despondency which seem to plague me most of the time. While I am collecting very old Valentines and old nost cards, I am also collecting rare old calendars and advertising adver-tising cards, in hopes of writing writ-ing a book about the items I collect and earn enough from it to get off this small VA pension and have medical care, which the VA is unable to afford me, so my hobbies have a dual purpose. Living on limited funds, I depend on friends and others for the items I collect and was wondering if any of your readers read-ers may have any very old Valentines or old post cards or rare old calendars they do not want, because I would be happy hap-py to have any they may care to send me and be glad to get them. ? Thank you for your time and kind considedation in reading my letter. Respectfully yours, LEON THOMPSON 623 Federal East Sattle, Wash., 98102. |
