Show SUSC Institute KSF approved i Funding has been approved ;by the National Science Foundation Foun-dation for an in-service work-,'Shop work-,'Shop for elementary science teachers to be taught at I Southern Utah State College j (Juring 1970-71, it was an-! an-! nounced by Dr. Wesley P. Lar-j Lar-j sen, dean of the SUSC School ! of Sciences. ( . Project director for the pro- gram is Prof. George LeBaron, j associate professor of physics t and engineering at the col-! col-! lege. He will be assisted by Dr. Lee Morrell, assistant professor profes-sor of chemistry. Both faculty members attended intensive training sessions in preparation prepara-tion for the work conducted by Columbia University in the summer of 1968. Thirty-five participants will be selected from among teachers, teach-ers, principals and supervisors in school districts in southern ' Utah and Nevada. The institue will begin with - a three week summer work-Shop work-Shop July 13-31. A follow-through follow-through program will be con-. con-. ducted on a consultant basis throughout the following academic aca-demic year. A study will be made of two ' NSF supported curricula, "Science, a Process Approach" and "Science Curriculum Improvement Im-provement Study Workshop." The participants will learn the content and philosophy of the praagrams by teaching children, handling equipment ; fend doing experiments under I the direction of th college fa-j fa-j culty and master teachers who are familiar with the projects I and their materials. I j Participants will return to their own school districts to ; establish "pilot classrooms," ') returning to SUSC ten times during the 1970-71 school year for discussion and evaluation sessions. i ; The main purpose of the institute is to initiate either of the new NSF science curricula curri-cula in the elementary grades of th area. |
