Show T-birds look for success in upcoming 1970 baseball season in Salt Lake City, are pushing for the other outfield spot. Coach Petty is waiting for the team to jell in order to tell just what their strengths are. The prospecs look to be better than last year, but time will tell. Southern Utah State's base-bal base-bal team opens its 1970 season in just two weeks with a double-header in Las Vegas against University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Pictures will play the most important role this year because be-cause of the tough schedule. Three lettermen are back to pick up their starting positions. posi-tions. Larry Eyre was the top pitchers last year with a 2.19 era. He is student teaching this quaarter but will join the team for the opener. Roy Ferg-useon Ferg-useon and Fred Esplin make up the other two lettermen pitchers. Ferguson was 4-2 last year and Esplin 2-2. Other pitching prospects include in-clude lefthander Rich Martin, transfer from UNLV, Curtis Hayle of Olympus High, and George Day and Randy Bracken Brack-en of Provo. With the exception of first base, all infield starters are back. Quick-with-the-glove Tex Anthony, Jon Hoover, and Tim Braithwaite make the going go-ing tough for batters. Pressure is being put on the vets by newcomers Scott Ack-erman, Ack-erman, Russ Chester, and Scott Coleman. Ackerman and Chester Ches-ter are one year out of the army and ready to play ball. Coleman comes from Olympus Olym-pus High School in Salt Lake City. Freshmen make up the prospects pro-spects for first base. Mike Og-rin Og-rin from Murray and Bill Ar-gyle Ar-gyle from Class AA champion Viewmont in Bountiful are pushing for the starting spot. Russ Peterson of Richfield High, a stand out player in the Class A tournament last year is another top candidate. Catching prospects are good. Catchers from the number one and two Utah AA teams are pushing each other for the spot. Val Cullimore from num. ber one Viewmont has a slight edge. Gerome Vadura of second sec-ond place Provo High is a stronger challenger. Jay Omer, transfer from Snow College, and Don Larson, and Don Conrad, Con-rad, a sophomore from Springville, Spring-ville, round out the catching prospects. Outfielders see spots taken by lettermen Don Larsen and Charles Norton. Norton has the highest battlig average of the lettermen returning, with .292 and Larsen follows closely close-ly with .287. Possible relief pitcher Hack Mitchell and Drew Hansen, freshman from Granger High JUNIORS WIN.
