Show Deer relocation undertaken by Fish - Game A cooperative project of the Utah Division of Kish and Game, Bureau of Land Management, Man-agement, and the Isatioiuil Park Service to trap doer in Zion National Park and release re-lease them in western Washington Wash-ington County was announced today by John E. Phelps, Director Di-rector of the Division of Fish and Game. Director Phelps said, "This cooperative project will be undertaken to remove a surplus sur-plus of deer in Zion National Park because these doer are seriously damaging their range." "Range condition is a critical crit-ical factor in our management manage-ment of deer in Utah and we are anxious to take action before the range problem becomes be-comes so severe that the deer forage is killed by overuse." A cooperative agreement between the three agencies call for the National Park Service to trap up to 100 head of deer. These animals will be tagged tag-ged by the Park Service and the Service will supply transport trans-port crates to be used in hauling haul-ing the deer. The Division of Fish and Game will pick up the deer in Zions Park and transport them to the release site. The deer will be released on BLM puiblic lands some 50 miles southwest of the Park. This release will be within the Terry-Ox Valley deer herd unit which can be reached even during inclement weather. weath-er. The trapping operation has begun and will continue until un-til June, 1971 or will terminate termin-ate earlier if the 100 head of deer have been trapped and released. |
