Show LETTERS TO THE EDITOR they had to argue over the time of every racer. Some one asked the starter how much longer the girls had to wait before they raced and he snapped "This is the way its done and if they don't like it they don't have to race." They would be great races with no racers and thats the way to kill them. Those youngster grow up to be the future adults. Any coach in th.e surrounding surround-ing area would make a qualified qual-ified timer and if Brian Head had to pay them to do it they would be ahead. Also the times should be posted where they can be seen, what fun is it for the kids to race if they don't even know what their times were. Since someone will surely say I don't know anything about it" I lived for five years at one of the largest Ski Resorts Re-sorts in the country and saw all kinds of races including National and Inter-National so I have seen how races should be handled. I hate to see Brian Head making such mistakes. After all the public and the young racers are what build an area. AN INTERESTED FAN. i I A LETTER TO THE EDITOR: J We attended the Snow Clas-I Clas-I sic at Brian Head this past f Saturday, and I think the Chamber of Commerce and the civic clubs of Cedar City I did a terrific job of promoting 5 and handling the event but I think Brian Head itself has a J long way to go on the accom-I accom-I modating of such a promo-J promo-J tion. There were over 2000 ski-t- ers in the area and the rest room doors in the Lodge were locked, because of lack of water wa-ter the signs on them said. If ti hadn't been for the portable facilities set up by the Lions Club things would have been quite difficult. There were lots of people who had come to watch the races and since the parking is always a problem they couldn't could-n't sit in their cars to watch, they had to stand out in the cold and steadily falling snow. The races were at least an hour late in starting so lots of people finally left.. The timing of the races was a farce. I doubt if the timers even knew how to use or read a stop watch. On the fore runners run-ners they first clocked Stein Erickson at .30.8 with Margo Walters just a 10th of a second sec-ond off his time at .30.9. I heard Margo Walters herself say "There's something terribly terri-bly wrong and I thinks its with the time keepers, because be-cause their making me out an awfully good skier." So they had to run their races over again with Stein's time being actually 1 minute even, quite a discrepancy and then all '. the professional skiers were ; dissatisfied with their times ' and raced at least once more i and some of them twice, while 1 all the young people who J had paid entry fees to race ; stood around in the cold wait- ing their turns. I saw at least ', one young racer drop out be-; be-; cause he got too cold. ; The starter and the timers were both very rude. I heard ; one youngster ask what his time was and one of the tim-: tim-: ers said "Will you get out of here and leave us alone, we're - having plenty of trouble as it is." They certainly were as Dear Editor: Sometimes I think that many of us are prone to take certain things for granted. I had an experience a few days ago that brought i t forceably to my attention how fortunate we are to have an organization such as our local lo-cal Volunteer Fire Dept. I had an oil stove malfunction malfunc-tion and the entire room and area was filled with fire and smoke so fast that it was impossible im-possible to handle the situation. situa-tion. I called across to my neighbors and asked them to call the Fire Department. I estimate that within two minutes min-utes of my making this request, re-quest, I heard the fire siren and that in about five minutes min-utes the trucks were there with a very fine crew of energetic, en-ergetic, helpful, pleasant fire fightres. The smoke was quickly drawn out of the building and the fire ex- ! tinguished and the boys were on their way to the Fire Station Sta-tion in about twenty minutes. I would like to express my appreciation to the Fire Department, De-partment, particularly to the fellows who responded to that call last Saturday. Sincerely, D. W. Corry |
