Show Irinkerhof f heads special CHS program One of the most important aspects of the philosophy of education at Cedar City High School (COHS) is that of reaching each child on his lev. i el. Special education at the high school is evidence of this i claim. The program is directed :by a most affable and human (individual, Charles Brinker- ; hoff. He states his main objec tive is "to provide for each student, actual experiences which will enable him to attain at-tain employment and a useful place in society. Such experiences ex-periences should enable him to become a loyal citizen with the ability to express himself, realize his desires and live ;with the dignity befitting a human being." At the current time, the program spans the three years a student k in the high school Special training is also avail-aole avail-aole in the junior high school. Mr. Brinkerhoff envisions a time when a special education educa-tion student may be granted a high school diploma upon the finding of employment and proving success for a stated stat-ed period of time in that employment. em-ployment. In the special education class, the student can learn to use free time profitably and happily. He can be guided to experience satisfaction in legitimate legi-timate recreational acivities so he will be able to choose these outlets as a matter of habit. It is a goal to help the student develop confidence and self respect in jobs he is capable of performing. He can become vocationally effective by developing habits, skills, and attitudes that will be conducive con-ducive to good life adjustments. adjust-ments. To accomplish his goals, Mr. Brinkerhoff combines com-bines such activities a.s job studies, in-school work experiences; exper-iences; i.e. lunchroom, custodial, custod-ial, and clerical experience. The student then goes on to community work in the morning morn-ing or afternoon; he works under both teacher's and employer's em-ployer's supervision. The stu- .dent works at his level. In the classroom, the time is devoted de-voted to counseling and individual indi-vidual work in relationship to the job. Also classroom activities activ-ities include a study of the following: fol-lowing: practical math, local, state, and national form of government, current events, personal hygiene, grooming and health. Driver education is included in the special class where possible. By the time the student is a senior, it is hoped that he will have had in-school work experience and on-the-job training in one or two jobs. This would lead to ultimate full-time employment employ-ment with teacher supervision. Mr. Brinkerhoff is specially trained in his field. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Brigham Young University Univers-ity in physical education and driver education. He has the Master of Education in the area of the intellectually handicapped. This degree was earned from Utah -State University. Uni-versity. He has attended special spec-ial workshops in both driver education and special education. educa-tion. , In addition to his work with the special education program, he also teaches physiology and driver education.
