Show ROLLO-glyphics KLIEN HOLLO Since I spent the past week end in southern California as a part of an excursion package put together through the SUSC Quarterback Club Roundtable, my comments naturally will center around that event. For those 36 who made the trip the figure $6S0 rings a , bell immediately. But for the rest of the readers the story has to be told and and I'm glad that I'm the one that can tell you about it. The trip incorporated attendance at-tendance at the SUSC - Fuller-ton Fuller-ton football game, the California Calif-ornia Angels vs. the Chicago Wiiite Sox, baseball game and a great football game between the Los Angeles Rams and the Atlanta Falcons. The incident of the $680 is in connection with the baseball base-ball game at Anaheim stadium. stad-ium. It's a story of one of those, one out of a hundred men, that still carry with them a badge of honesty and a desire de-sire to do the right thing. What happened is that Cal Carter he is the one out of a hundred found a wallet that had dropped behind one of the seats behind where our group was seated. The wallet if you haven't already guessed guess-ed contained $680 in cash, five hundred of it in one hundred dollar bills. Despite that fact Cal made every effort to find the owner not be from California, no one here would have returned the wallet." Well Cal you made me feel good. I was impressed. I hope everyone was. As a dealer in liquors be brought a gift for Cal, an imported wine from Italy. I don't suppose that Cal will use the wine, but I hope he keeps it as a symbol of what this old world needs honesty. That's just one incident of many on this fine trip, Another An-other involves our fine architect archi-tect John Rcwlcy. Did you know that he sang a duet wth Sue Reiny while we were in California? That's quite a thing, too. Net only did he sign a duet with the young starlet but it was with 67,893 people looking on. You see Miss Reiny sang the national anthem to open the Rams-Falcons football game and John was really booming it out with her. Of course so were at leatt a portion por-tion of the other over 67 thousand thou-sand in attendance. A discouraging note, however how-ever was the obvious lack of patriotism shown by some in the audience who would not stand for the national anthem and while the colors wero being presented. before he left the park but it was to no avail. As a consequence con-sequence he returned to the motel and began a series of telephone calls and finally through a security protection aj ;ncy the owner of the wallet wal-let was contacted. Just prior to leaving the motel area Sunday afternoon for the professional football game the owner arrived. Since most of our'group was on the bus already to go I happened to be there when Cal returned the wallet. The Owner is a recently naturalized naturaliz-ed American citizen with oriental ori-ental origins. He is a liquor store operator in Los Angeles. Here was a man that seemed seem-ed stunned as he received the wallet, completely intact from Cal. But, the unusual nature of the situation was not that the man had lost $680. What he couldn't believe is that there was someone left in this old world Q ours, that; would re-. re-. turn it- ,., ... . He just kept shaking his head. He Just couldn't believe it. Then he asked where Cal was from and of course he told him Utah. His reply, and this may not be this , exact words, was "I knew you must The trip, as mentioned, was the product of a Quarterback Club project. It was put together to-gether as a package program for the development of scholarship schol-arship money . for the SUSC athletic program. Inspiration for the project and the man principally responsible for the idea and a good share of setting set-ting up the trip was head football coach Tom Kingsford. For those 36 who made the trip I hop,? I speak for all of them in expressing our thanks to him and to Bruce Osborne and the rest of the athletic rtaff at SUSC for their efforts. I only hope that the community commun-ity can show the support to the college that, at least in this instance, they have shown to us, and although only 36 enjoyed this fine undertaking you can rest assure that there will be others. Why don't-you try and be on the next one. . And with that closing note may I invite, ypu to the SUSC-Western, States football game at Thunderbird stadium Saturday. , The Thunderbirds will be opening their conference confer-ence play and need all the support they can get. Good lack Tom and all you Thun-Jerbirds. Thun-Jerbirds. '." ' |
