Saturday night the Redmen traveled to Hurricane where thgy again had to come from behind to defeat the Tigers by a 57 to 61 score. Jixie really won the championship cham-pionship when they defeated the Redmen at Cedar City in ar overtime battle for th first league contest of the season foi the Redmen. Except for that victory the top ttaee contenders, Dixie, Millard and Cedar won home an-fl home battles during the course of the regular season. Dixie's win against Cedar at home pushed them to the top of he heap and the loss push-ed",the push-ed",the Redmen into third with Myiard splitting all the way finishing up in second. Against Millard Friday the Retimen stayed in the first three quarters of play only on sorpe fine foul shooting. The aggressive Eagles of Millard led by strong Richard George took the battle to the Redmen and were getting the best of tha effort early xept fofr the foul situation. ing a tie in the last nine seconds sec-onds with a 10-footer from the side to give the Redmen the lead and the victory. Haight and Eric Marchant dominated scoring for the Redmen with 20 points each. Steve Kunz, Tom Cardon and Burnie Leavitt Lea-vitt picked up the remaining 17 points for the Redmen. Millard had three men in double figures led by George with 18, B. Robinson with 13 and Keel with 10. Against Hurricane it was the strength of the Redmen forward wall that led to the victory with Haight, Marchant and Kunz dominating the boards. Although the Tigers moved out to a lead in the game the stronger rebounding of the Redmen took its toll before game's end and the Redmen won going away. Haight of the Redmen had one of his best evenings in a fine high school career, winding up with 29 points. He was followed by Marchant with 21 and Randy Davis, who saw limited action ac-tion in the last half of play came off the bench to pour in eight points. Hunter led the Tigers with 22 points followed follow-ed by Stout with 14 and Foster Fos-ter with 11. I League battles will wind up this week with the Redmen hosting the Delta Rabbits Friday Fri-day night, with Dixie at Hurricane. Hur-ricane. The Rabbits are winless in league play this season, however, how-ever, a win or loss will not change the standing of these two clubs in the final contest. Ddxie on the other hand, assured as-sured of at least a tie for the championship, must defeat Hurricane Thursday to win the title outright. Along with the title will go an automatic berth in the State Class A tournament. The Flyers will be favored favor-ed to win but a loss could thrown them into a tie with Millard, which would necessitate neces-sitate a playoff, undoubtedly on a neutral floor, for the championship. All Class A teams of the Region will then meet next week in a playoff in Cedar City at which time two additional addi-tional berths in the Class A meet will be decided. Playoffs will be held February 26, 27 and 28. |
