Show ROLLO-glyphics h KI.IEN ROLLO connection with Cedar City's Independence Day celebration. celebra-tion. My hat is off to the Lions Club for the tremendous efforts ef-forts the members have put ' into the celebration in the ( past and, from all indications will continue this year. ' I started to talk about the button and had better return. Inscribed on the button are the celebration dates, July 3, 4 and 5, but my question is raised with the remainder of the inscription. It states: "What's Right With Amer-ica?" Amer-ica?" I assume that the Lions are suggesting to us that we should think positively about our country and recall after reading the phrase, those things that are right now. But my first impulse was somewhat some-what different, as if the Lions where really questioning if there is anything right with America. The Lioins have gone overboard over-board to promote patriotism - "v in Cedar City so I hope that you, along with me, will take a few minutes to bring to mind the things that we really real-ly believe is right in this country then take the time to express thanks to the Lions for their efforts. If it's positive thinking they want, I'm going to try and do it. Won't you join me? receptions and cpen houses held in Cedar City Saturday evening and it was interesting interest-ing to note how ofton paths would cross in making the rounds. One person mentioned mention-ed that he was having more fun than at a regular progressive pro-gressive dinner party. Those wedding bells were certainly rnging and if my mail is a ndication the , bll; -..-ill co t n -.ie to toll t lr rgiout the entire month. Weddings are festive occasions occa-sions and these young pecple are certainly getting off to a god st. t. The enly question t th::t renain-, is whether or not i'u iter Ila avai( will hold out through it all. Hunter's wedding service has become a mpt prpular service in Cedar City and it isn't surpising that turner merchants ar0 now fol-' fol-' lowing suit. It can't be denbd that wedding wed-ding business is bug business busi-ness during the month of June. W I hope everyone doesn't take the same pessimistic attitude s I do regarding the promot ional buttons being distributed distribut-ed by the Cedar City Lion? Club. For those who have not seen them, the buttons ara bright red, oval metalic badges being sold as a means of raising funds for the fireworks fire-works display to be staged in We've heard a lot about railroads rail-roads lately relatively to the fact that as a conveyance for passengers they are practically practical-ly nonexistant. That's what attracted my attention at-tention this week to a release from Union Pacific Railroad relative to that company's expenditures ex-penditures in the state of Utah last year. In wages and taxes Union Pacific Railroad in Uta'i totaled to-taled more than $31.8 m'liion. Final figures for 1970 revealed reveal-ed that employees in the state .vere paid $32,235,410 in wages while, state, ccunt and local taxes came to $2X63.121. Total To-tal wag? payments t r 1;: ir 13 western states in which Union Pacific operates came to $283,630,170 whil; t al taxes amounted to S'.iO nil-lion. nil-lion. Those figures would seem to indicate that Union Pacific Itailroad still plays a mighty important part in Utah's economy. eco-nomy. I was chastized last week and as 1 reflect on the comment com-ment I find that it was justified. justi-fied. It seems that my bad grammer cami to the front in last week's column and at least one person picked it up and brought it to my attention. atten-tion. It just seems that my grammer gram-mer ain't no good noway, but I'll try to do better. Saturday evening was a rare experience for most residents resi-dents of Cedar City. If there was any question in the minds of people that June Is the month for weddings, it was dispelled. There were no less than five |
