Show Area girls win G.S. offices , ', v': .1- Si KATHI HOWARD METTE ROBINSON f"' !;r " Clf '7 ' to , ELLEN WHITING CAROLYN WATSON May City; Ann Fenton, Cedar City was named a commissioner commis-sioner of Culver City; Carolyn Watson, Parowan, a commissioner commis-sioner of Spry City; Mette Robinson, Ro-binson, Parowan, a commissioner commis-sioner of Bamberger City, and Kathi Howard, Enterprise, was elected auditor of Dern City. Miss Whiting in the daughter daugh-ter of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Whiting; Whit-ing; Miss Fenton the daughter daugh-ter of Mr. and Mrs. Pat Fenton; Fen-ton; Miss Watson, the daughter daugh-ter of Mr. and Mrs. Woodrow W. Watson; Miss Rcbinson, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Leon D. Robinson, and Miss Howard, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dayne H Howard. Involvced in Girls State were 339 girls and 30 counselors counsel-ors in intensive studies in citizenship cit-izenship and rights, privileges, privi-leges, duties, and responsibilities responsibil-ities of self-government. The participants attended eovernment sessions and eon. 6 , ANN FENTON Five girls from this area were elected to the position of City'Commissioner in elections conducted at the 25th annual session of the American Legion Leg-ion Auxiliary Girls State held this past week on the campus of Southern Utah State College. ' . Ellen Whiting of Cedar City was elected commissioner of ducted electons in the same manner as those conducted on a city, county, and state basis. Citizens of Girls State are selected from high schools throughout the state on the basis of character and leadership. leader-ship. They are all juniors this past year and are expected to implement their Girls State training during their senior year. The event was initiated In 1947 and has grown to be- I come the largest single extracurricular extra-curricular education program for high school students in the nation. Nearly 6000 girls from Utah have participated in the program pro-gram since its inception. |
