Show County selected for NEW pilot program Iron County has been select- ed by the U.S. Department ol Health, Education, and Welfare, Wel-fare, as one of 22 counties In the nation to participate in a pilot program called Health Start. The purpose of the Health Start program, according to J. Lynn Uibel, Coordinator of Community Development at Southern Utah State College, the sponsoring agent for the program, is to assist low income in-come and minority groups ini improving their health deliv-1 ery systems. Wide rangft program The program, according to Mr. Uibel, will work with medical, dental, psychological, and nutritional needs. The program will also assist in speech therapy, eye care, and many educational needs. The Health Start program is administered by the Office of Child Development which is an agency of HEW. The program pro-gram is administered locally by a policy advisory board . consisting of medical personnel person-nel and parents in the target area. Dr. McRay Cloward, Dean of the School of Continuing Education at SUSC, announced announc-ed Thursdav that Iron Coun- ty had been selected to participate par-ticipate in the program as one of two counties in the HEW Region 8, which is the Intermountain area. Children's health needs The Health Start program focuses primarily on health needs of children in the target tar-get area, but will also assist parents with health needs. A preliminary survey of the Iron County area indicated that over 200 children would qualify qual-ify for assitance under the program. Mr. Uibel said that most of the work in the Iron County area would be with the Indian In-dian citizens. "We are trying to keep in mind respect for the cutlural traditions of the people that we will work with," said Mr. Uibel in explaining ex-plaining the program. The program will begin on July 1 and will run through July 1, 1972. The Iron County Health Start program will be funded through the Department of Health, Education and Welfare Wel-fare and will work on a budget bud-get ol $q7,50Q tor the jear. |
