Show LETTERS ' TO THE EDITOR , - June 16, 1957 re a m ciij', vuu Editor Iron County Record Cedar City, Utah Dear Sir: I am writing In response of the "Resolution Regarding Super Highway Routing" by Local 2751 United Steelworkers of America in, the June 13 issue of the Rec ord. I am not making an issue of the highway route Itself, but in the manner that It was presented by the union members. Every person or group is entitled to express ex-press opinions on public matters, that is Americanism, but for the largest labor organization of Cedar Ce-dar City to accuse our Chamber of Commerce of having the sole motive of "monopolistic, mone-tay mone-tay protectionism for the main-street main-street businessmen," is disgusting. disgust-ing. Of course the chamber is try. ing to look out for Cedar City, That Is what it is for. The union members seem to forget that they are part of Cedar too. Whatever affects the city will affect every person In it. These Union men seem to forget that they have friends, neighbors, and relatives employed in the business district dis-trict that would suffer if Cedar was to lose its tourist business. Wouldn't it be sad if we didn't have the business and professional profession-al men, and their employees, to belong to, and staff our civic organizations or-ganizations which promote all of the good that they do. May I remind the union membership that most of these club members are very closely connected to the business faction of Cedar City. This unwarranted attack on the chamber and the businessmen business-men seems to bear out stories of other disloyal actions by this union. It is told around Cedar that the union is contemplating building Its own gas station and or grocery store so that they, the union members, could buy all of this merchandise wholesale. whole-sale. It Is a known fact that they have , wholesale connections on many hardware items. The story is told of a local union member going to the local hardware stores, examining several models of deer rifles, and then ordering his choice through his union wholesale connection. Is this loyalty to your next door neighbors, neigh-bors, who are trying to make a living in a business of their own? I think if the union were -to look Into a businessman's life that they would see a thorny path. Just about all that is required re-quired to work at the union Jobs at the mine la a lunch box, where most of us have a college education, which cost plenty. We have from several thousand, to hundreds of thousands of dollars invested in our business, and most of ua borrowed It to get started. We work from 50 to 100 hours a week, we have no Job security, health programs, vacation vaca-tion benefits, retirement plans, etc., we also have to put up with bad checks and bad charge accounts, which I say from experience, ex-perience, the credit ratings of my fellow businessmen are much better than my union member accounts, r I. for one. think that I work hard enough for the extra I make, and if you fellows will Just look at the businessmen who have gone to work at the mines In the past year, you will see that there are Just as many worries In business as there are dollars. Regardless of which route Is taken on the new highway, I think that the authorities will give everything proper consideration, considera-tion, and that we, the citizens of Cedar City, will not have to resort to being nasty with the other factions Involved. A Cedar City Businessman the highway as we approach Summit is a hedge of yellow roses planted several years ago by the Walker Brothers and which are now In full bloom, making an Inspiring sight for people passing by. On the opposite side of the highway is a hedge of tamarac, which is also In bloom and all along the road on either side for miles is wheat heading out, re-placing re-placing the unsightly weeds and thistle. Thanks to whoever made that great Improvement. Then as you go through Parowan and see toe Wuliucriiui ulayiajr til Iris CH 400 varieties and colors at the home of Mrs. Ross Guymon. In reading the article on page one of "This Week Magazine" Sunday, June 16, the author was rlgh4 in saying "We Americans are famous for our generosity, but are we quick to say a pleasant pleas-ant word?" Read the article and It may help us all to bring about "A New American Custom," Cus-tom," which would make a better bet-ter community In which we live. MAUDE L.
