Show Petroleum Council Seeks Reduction In Federal Gas Tax A statewide petition campaign seeking popular support for reduction re-duction in the federal gasoline tax, now four cents a gallon, was announced today by J. C Williams, Wil-liams, area chairman of the Utah Petroleum Council. Mr. Williams said the week-long campaign would begin Saturday, Oct 1, the first anniversary of the temporary tempor-ary one-cent a gallon Increase in the federal levy enacted by Congress last year. The added penny, which Is costing Utah drivers $3.3 million during Its first year, is due to expire next June 30, 1961, according ac-cording to a promise made by Congress when the tax was Increased. In-creased. The combined federal-state tax burden on gasoline In Utah is now 10 cents a gallon, Including Includ-ing a six-cent state tax. These taxes added $34.1 million to the annual gasoline bill of Utah's motorlnst Mr. Williams said.. |
