Show 4-H'ers Met Teens From Many States During Chicago Congress Four Utah college students had the opportunity to meet 4-H'ers from every state and Puerto Rico at the recent National 4-11 Club Congress in Chicago. The four, who attended as state award winners in their 1964 club projects, also heard inspiring addresses on citizenship citizen-ship by noted speakers and went sight-seeing, with a stop at the famed Art Institute. The winners, chosen by the Cooperative Extension Service, are Nancy Richards, 18, of American Fork; Jeanette Hurst, 18, of 1441 Yale Ave.. Salt Lake City; Sharon Schmidt, 19. of 8312 S. 2700 W., West Jordan, and Floyd Nielsen, 18, of Murray. Mur-ray. Miss Richards attends Brig-ham Brig-ham Young University in Salt Miti Hunt NUImii Lake City. The others are enrolled en-rolled at Utah State University. Miss Richards, the dairy award winner, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Grant Richards. Her father operates an 83-acre dairy farm. She has earned $1,300 this year on her dairy project She has a herd of five milking cows and five heifers. In 1963, she won first place in fitting and showmanship at the National Holstein Convention, held in Utah. A Junior Miss of the Holstein Friesian Association, Miss Richards Rich-ards was the congress guest of the Oliver Corporation. , Miss Hurst, the bread award winner, remembers as a young girl that she loved to watch her mother make bread. "It looked so much fun to knead the dough, mold it into loaves and espe cially to punch it down," she reminisced. Since then, she has become so proficient at baking that her doctor refused cash payment for her most recent physical checkup and instead asked her to teach his wife and daughters how to bake. Seems he had seen one of her demonstrations and taken a sample home. Miss Hurst has made up 116 different baking recipes during her eight years in 4 H. Her parents par-ents are Mr. and Mrs. Elden G. Hurst. Her mother is a 4 II leader. Miss Hurst's trip was sponsored by Standard Brands. Miss Schmidt, the dress revue award winner, found making her first skirt the hardest. "This, I believe, is where I first learned the meaning of patience and self control." she said. The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Miti Schmidt MIm Rich.rdt Joseph Schmidt, she was a guest in Chicago of Simplicity Pattern Co. Inc. Her winning garment was a winter coat of black and white houndstooth check. A junior 411 leader since 19G0, Miss Schmidt was the recipient re-cipient of a 4 II cash scholarship from the American Dairy Association Asso-ciation last year. Nielsen, the agricultural award winner, is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Nielsen. His father is a farmer. Young Neil-sen Neil-sen received his first calf for Christmas in 195.V This year he was a member of the Utah 4 II judging team at the National 4-H Roundup in Denver. His 411 project crops have been barley, potatoes and sugar beets. He hns saved $2 507 from 4-H project earning. He was the guest of International Harvester. |
