Show 1964 YEAR OF PROGRESS As i he yvar ends and we look back on the happenings in 0lar City and area during 1UG4, there is much evidence of substantial progress in many fields, all of which should have n tremendous effect on the future economy and cul-turrof cul-turrof the city and county. Kstahlishment of a new industry in Cedar City, the manufacture of canvas goods, should play an important part in the economy of the area. The plant, not. yet in op-oration op-oration hut expected to be soon, was established through community, company and government cooperation during dur-ing the year, and will create considerable employment for local citizens. Considerable business expansion is also evident, including in-cluding establishment of another modern motel in the city, a new cafe, now under construction and general expansion expan-sion in already established businesses. The new Brian Head ski resort, established this year and expected to open in the next few days, also promises to he a tremendous influence on the economy of the area, by attracting large numbers of visitors during the winter months, which will do much to make tourist and recreation recrea-tion activities a stable year-around economy influence on the entire area. Of tremendous importance is the strides made by College Col-lege of Southern Utah. With approval from the Coordinating Coordinat-ing Council on Higher Education, and of the board of trustees trus-tees of the Utah State University, of expansion of the local institution to a full four-year liberal arts college, is one of the most important advancements in the area in many, many years. The college, one of the most important assets in all southern Utah, has made other significant strides during the year, not the least of which is the increase in enrollment enroll-ment to more than 1200 students. Added also has been a new physical education building, and two new dormitories, one for men and one for women. Of great significance also, is the steady increase of volumes in the college library through public contribution, one of the most important contributions to the expansion of the college. Expansion of the Cedar City Municipal Airport, providing pro-viding longer and mere adoquai runway facilities, which will certainly increase use of the airport for commercial and private services, was another most important advancement advance-ment in the area. Other steps forward in the line of transportation has been partial completion of two important highway projects, pro-jects, a section of Interstate 15 from the Washington County Coun-ty line to Hamilton's Fort, and a section of Utah 56, from Main Street in Cedar City to a point five miles west of the city. Continuing improvements of services by the addition cf facilities Ly t!:c Mountain Stsi" ry'i- - z" .. and the California-Pacific Utilities Co., have also contributed contribu-ted much in these fields. With a steaJy and continued expansion of services in almost every field, the citizens of this area should look to the coming year with confidence. There has been no particular par-ticular boom expansion in any phases of activity, but certainly cer-tainly a steady and consistent expansion that promises much for the future of southern Utah. |
