Show Sons of Pioneers Gather in Cedar for National Confab Clem Judd, Cedar City, convention conven-tion chairman for the Sons of Utah Pioneers National Convention Conven-tion staged here last week end, was given a beautiful trophy for one of the outstanding SUP con-venions, con-venions, as hosts. President Ray Knell accepted the trophy as well as congratulations congratu-lations from past nation -5 1 president presi-dent George E. Everton Sr. of Logan and the new president Rulon Ru-lon Morgan of Provo. Other officers elected were Frank J. Earl, Provo; Milton Backman, Suit Lake City; Joseph S. McDonald, Sugar House; Jesse Layton, Huntsville; Francis L. Christensen, Brigham City, and Lorenzo Hansen, Logan, all vice The Mormon Battalion held flag raising ceremonies in connection con-nection with the national convention con-vention and President Royden C. Braithwaite, of College of Southern South-ern Utah, hosts, spoke Sunday. Nearly 200 delegates of the SUP were in attendance at the convention held Friday, Saturday and Sunuay on the CSU campus. The Mormon Battalion unit performed the flag ceremony including in-cluding 12 uniformed members representing the troops enlisted from the ranks of the Mormon pioneers during the war with Mexico. In addition t the outstanding host award presented to the Cedar Ce-dar City chapter the Box Elder chapter was cited as the most active. Named outstanding couple at the conference were Mr. and Mrs. Milton V. Backman of Salt Lake City with Mrs. Zelma Thompson named as recipient of the best short story award. During the three-day event delegates toured many of the historical sites in the southern Utah area including the site of the Mountain Meadow Massacre and the William R. Palmer Museum Mu-seum in Cedar City. Scenic excursions to Cedar Breaks and other points of interest inter-est were included on the agenda for those in attendance. |
