Show i E OUR SOIL it OUR STRENGTH E By Lelaad Calsoa Soil Conservation Service Recent floods In Cedar City makes us all realize that permanent perma-nent measures must be taken to reduce flood damage to the homes, farms and other Improvements Im-provements In this area. More than one and one-half years ago leaders of several organizations or-ganizations in and around Cedar Ce-dar City prepared a report on the . flood damages from Coal Creek. Squaw Cavt Creek, and Fiddlers Canyon, and made application ap-plication for assistance under the Watershed Protection and Flood Prevention Act After considerable con-siderable study by state and federal fed-eral officers the request for assistance as-sistance was approved. However, several other watersheds water-sheds In the State of Utah had priority over Coal Creek, but It Is next in line for study by the Watershed Planning Party. They are now working on American Fork Canyon and are expected to be In Cedar City Aug. 27. During Dur-ing recent months considerable work has been done on the Coal Creek watershed by local personnel per-sonnel of the Soil Conservation Service and it is expected that the field work for the work plan will be completed late this fall. After completion of the work plan, during the winter, it will be presented to the sponsoring organizations and other interest ed people for their approval. It is not expected that the work plan will eliminate all floods in this area, but it will reduce the intensity of floods so that damage will be greatly reduced. |
