Show Nation's Birthday Program Delights Visitors A very successful celebration was staged in Parowan last Thursday to celebrate Indepen-dance Indepen-dance Day, with many out-of-town people, Including former residents coming to Join local residents in the day-long pro-gram pro-gram of events. An exceptionally fine parade was the big opening event, starting start-ing from the County Rest home shortly after 9 a. m., and proceeding pro-ceeding to Main Street and then to 200 North street. The parade stretched out more than two blocks long with many outstanding outstand-ing floats in the line of march. Judges picked the three prize winning floats in the motorized division and In the miniature division, with the "Liberty Bell" entry of the Southern Utah Dairy Company getting first prize, the Parowan Gun and Rod Club's "Big Fish" float getting second and the Stake M I A float bear ing the Goddess of Liberty, in third place. Miniature division winners were: Second Ward Homebulld. ers group, first; Fenton's, second sec-ond and Craig Stubbs, son of Mr. and Mrs. Howard Stubbs, third. The presence of Miss Jackie Winterrose, Miss Iron County added ad-ded to the parade, as did the presence of the Milford Riding Club, which came at the Invitation Invita-tion of the Red Hill Wranglers of Parowan. Following the parade the children's chil-dren's sports were held followed by the public meeting at 11. This meeting was prepared by Parowan Paro-wan Post 20, American Legion, with Ross Taylor post commander command-er conducting. Featured speaker was AIrd G. Merkley with other talks being given by LeRoy Or-ton Or-ton as "Uncle Sam," and LoRen Orton as "Goddess of Liberty." Norma Lee Mercer as "Miss Utah" sang "God Bless America" and Howard D. Knight sang "My Own United States." Barbara Jane Bayles was at the Piano for all musicals. The meeting opened with the posting of the colors by Whitney Orton and Homer Adams, and the Pledge of Allegiance led by Phillip Bayles. Carol Wright led the congregational singing to open and close the meeting. Bishop George F. Rowley offered the Invocation and Bishop R. Taylor Miller offered the benediction. bene-diction. The best attended event of the day was the race meet and amateur ama-teur rodeo sponsored in the afternoon af-ternoon by the Red Hill Wranglers. Wrang-lers.
