Show COMMENDABLE VENTURE As the result of outstanding leadership provided through the Cedar City Elks Lodge and wholehearted support of other organizations of the community, Cedar City enjoyed one of the finest Independence Day celebrations celebra-tions of many years last Thursday. A major problem in recent years has been that of, keeping residents in town for the Independence Day celebration, cele-bration, but the type of program and activities provided this year under the leadership of the Elks pleased the many people who did stay in town, and will undoubtedly result in much better participation in years to come. Well organized activity with excellent cooperation from such organizations as the Lady Lions, the Iron Rangers, Ran-gers, the .American Legion, Little League, College of Southern South-ern Utah physical education department and the Cedar City Volunteer Fire Department, provided a full program of varied and outstanding entertainment for young and old. As usual the miniature parade sponsored by the Lady Lions was an outstanding event, with many beautiful floats and a large number of children participating. The parade was led by the popular Cedar City High School band, and organizations and business firms made the parade pa-rade a success by entering really worthwhile floats. The celebration was opened Wednesday night, July 3, With an excellent rodeo staged by the Iron Rangers Riding Club in cooperation with the Elks. Following the parade the American Legion and Elks cooperated to present an excellent patriotic program, and from the close of the meeting until evening, a succession of events kept everyone busy and entertained with never a dull moment. An unusual array of concessions set up on the City park by the Elks did much to keep everyone, young and old, entertained. The usual races and games for youngsters of all ages lasted through the morning and early afternoon. Midway during the afternoon baseball activities began be-gan with the American Legion Junior baseball team meeting meet-ing McGHl, Nev., in an exciting game, and this was followed follow-ed by a regular Little League encounter, that pleased regular league supporters and many who had not been conscious of the type of ball played by these youngsters. In the early evening the Elks and CSU athletic department depart-ment cooperated to stage an excellent boxing program that pleased a large crowd. The climax of the day came when the Volunteer Fire Department staged an excellent fireworks display that thrilled hundreds of spectators. The display started, as advertised promptly at 9 p. m., and not one moment's delay de-lay took place In the entire display. The firemen did an outstanding job in this feature for which they deserve much credit. The final event of the celebration was. a dance on the tennis courts at the city park, bringing to a close a program that was exceptionally well received, and for which every individual and group who assisted should be highly praised. We hope that the success of this program prompts the city to continue In the same manner in the future, and that we can have even better celebrations in the future. |
