Show Road Oiling Project Contingent on Suitable Gravel Site Procuring a site which contains con-tains a large supply of suitable gravel as the problem which is facing Parowan City before any street oiling project can be undertaken un-dertaken was brought out at the Monday meeting of the city council. A fairly accurate survey of the streets within the city that are in need of oiling has been made by the streets and sidewalks committee, with the survey revealing re-vealing approximately seven miles of streets that should be brought under the program. While the city Isn't financially able to do this much street oiling oil-ing under a contemplated pro-gram pro-gram for this year, it may be possible to do a large part of this mileage providing the gravel grav-el is procured for the project. District Road Engineer Earl Johnson of Cedar City, and Glade E. Smith, district clerk, met with the council at Monday's meeting, meet-ing, with Mr. Johnson called In to help draw up forms for obtaining ob-taining Parowan's City's portion of Class C Road Funds allotted during the past three years. The City has left this money with the state road department to build up for such a project as is contemplated this year and the amount now available is slightly over $11,000. Approximately 8.200 tons of crushed gravel will be needed for the project, with the Union Construction Company, which is now building the piece of road in Parowan Canyon, making a tentative offer to crush this gravel gra-vel for 75 cents a ton. Getting the gravel out on the streets would add to the cost of the project pro-ject and oil would cost an additional addi-tional several thousand dollars depending on the scope of the project. Another item of expense would be the purchase of several hundred hun-dred feet of metal culvert to lengthen those which now carry city water across streets and which are not long enough. Engineer Johnson agreed to help complete the forms for applying ap-plying for the money coming from the state and to furnish more definite figures on the cost of gravel and oil. and made recommendations rec-ommendations that the city study stu-dy the armor coat type of surfac. ing which the state is now using on parts of Its road system in this district. The streets and sidewalks com-mitee com-mitee was Instructed to worv with streets supervisor Mario Topham in procuring a gravel supply. |
