Show Local Guard Unit Initiates Christmas Project Headquarters and Headquarters Headquar-ters Battery, 213th Armored Field Artillery Battalion, Cedar City's local National Guard unit, is making plans to actively participate partici-pate as a "Sub for Santa," according ac-cording to word received from Capt. E. T. Woolf, commanding officer of the 213th. The nature of the program, as outlined by Capt. Woolf, will be repairing and refinishing broken and discarded toys and games. The program was suggested by MSgt. Mercer Smith, a new resident resi-dent of Cedar City and a full-time full-time employee of the local guard unit. Coordination of the program pro-gram will be under the direction of Lt. Ed Hahne, commanding officer of the Cedar City battery. When presented to the members of the unit, the proposal of the "Sub for Santa" program was enthusiastically en-thusiastically received. Tentative plans call for turning over repaired re-paired items to one of the local civic clubs which actively supports sup-ports a Christmas program and is aware of where and how the toys should be distributed. "I wish to emphasize," reported Capt. Woolf, "that the local guard unit considers itself in part a civic ci-vic organization, and as such wishes to participate, according to its capabilities, in civic affairs." Capt. Woolf explained that because be-cause of the nature of the organization, organ-ization, funds were not available for carrying out an extensive Christmas program. "But our men have hands and they have hearts," he emphasized, and we will provide the means necessary neces-sary to effectively carry ou our project. "But in order to insure the success suc-cess of this program, we must have the cooperation of the area's residents. If those who have discarded dis-carded or worn out, broken toys and games will telephone 1031, a vehicle will be dispatched to pick them up. If convenient the toys may be left at the Cedar City armory ar-mory between the hours of eight and five on week days." Capt. Woolf asserted that if the program is successfully supported support-ed and carried out this year it will be continued as an annual project. "We are keenly cognizant of the possibilities our program offers of-fers to bring joy into the lives of many of the county's underprivileged under-privileged children," concluded Capt. Woolf, "and we ask you to help us make our undertaking a fruitful one." |
