Show Broncos Show Promise of Good Season in Second Compton Game Coach Cleo Potty's College of Southern Utah basketball squad' split a two-game series with the Complon Tartars of Compton, ! Calif. , this week end. In a bene-! fit game played at Las Vegas ' Friday evening the Broncos drop-1 pc;l the game 72 to (10. Saturday j the two teams met in the C S U fieldhouse and the local fans saw j the broncos subdue the Tartars by a scor? of 75 to G2. Friday evening at Las Vegas Coach Petty had a hard time finding a working combination against the talented California quintet. Hitting a low percentage percent-age from the field the Broncos were trailing by six points at half time and the lead was stretched to 12 for the final gun. Scoring was fairly consistent for both teams and Compton at no time held a greater margin than the final spread of 12 points. Skee'cr Kant on, six foot two inch forward for Compton, led the attack at-tack I-ri lay at the Las Vegas gymnasium. Saturday evening the local fans saw the Broncos take their second game in as many starts on the local floor. The win for the Broncos indicated the poten tial strength of the club, one of the best all-around units in several sev-eral years according to Coach Petty. A determined Bronco squad put on Hie steam early in the contest con-test jumping from a 12 to 7 lead to a 21 to 7 lead with some exceptionally ex-ceptionally fine shooting by Keith Cooley and Douglas Stoker. The two men dunked in nine points, five for Cooley and four for Staker while Compton went scoreless. The Broncos, from this point on were never bettered in the contest. The Broncos really showed their worth by the end of the first half nf nl.-iu with nn 11 rviint art. vantage, 40 to 20. Defensewise this fete was outstanding. Starting Start-ing lineup of the evening for the Broncos consisted of Stoker, Cooley, Coo-ley, Dale Neilson, Ray Robinson and John Wood. Neilson scored 10 points in the first half of play. Cooley tied with Banton of Compton for high point honors, each with 16 points. Stoker of the C S U posted 15 and Wood 12. Late in the second half of play the Broncos switched into an offensive of-fensive system new to the C S U fans. Moving all men onto either the left or right side of the playing play-ing court, one of the forwards would move to the open side of the court and act as a pivot man for the guard to drive past him or pivot and shoot from the open side of the court. Robinson, standing 5-11, was used as the forward pivot and when the play went into operation the Broncos jumped into commanding G-1 to 50 lead. Robinson hit three field goals from the position and the Tartars were hard pressed for a defense against the unique system. sys-tem. Fifteen of the lR-man squad saw action on Saturday evening. The lGth man, Steve Ro.elle, was out because of an ankle injury. in-jury.
