Show Board of Education Takes fiction To Hasten Proposed Building Scheme The Iron County Board of Education took further stops at its meeting Monday to continue its building program, pro-gram, issuing an order to call for bids for the construction of a new bus garage, approving tentative plans for the Cedar City Junior High School remodeling, and calling for a public hearing for the transler of funds for building purposes. A call for bids for the new school bus garage is published pub-lished in this issue of the Iron County Record, with the bids to be opened on Monday, Jan. 10. The present garage is entirely inadequate for repairs and maintenance service on the buses operated by the school district, and plans for a new garage have been prepared. It is expected that the new building build-ing will cost trom $20,(K)() to $22,-000. $22,-000. Plans were prepared by L. Robert Gardner, local architect. Mr. C.arnncr also submitted preliminary plans for expansion off the Cedar City junior high school building. The plans were approved by the board and the architect instructed to prepare do-tailed do-tailed plans and specifications as quickly as possible in order that the contract may be let and work Marled as early in the spring as possible so that the j structure can be ready for the 'opening of school next September. I Connecting Wing The plans call for a connecting wing between the present junior high building and the adjacent elementary school building, with remodeling of both to provide for addition;;l space for the junior high classes. Removal of students from the West Elementary School to the new East and North Elementary Ele-mentary buildings has made it possible to convert a part of the elementary building to junior high use. The board set Wednesday, January Jan-uary 12 for the public hearing on a proposal to transfer funds from the reserve building fund to the operating fund to be used for paying for the proposed new garage and junior high school buildings and to complete payments pay-ments on the North Elementary. Music-Fest Participation In addition to considering the building and budget matters the board r.uihorized Cedar City high school participation in the California-Western Music Festival in Berkeley next April. Under the authoiization Eugene Helland, new head of the instrumental music department, and several students from the school will attend the festival. Students are selected for participation on a basis of their music accomplishments, accomplish-ments, and will be named shortly short-ly before the date of the festival. The board approved the annual audit of school district operations, opera-tions, and heard two reports on conferences. The audit commended commend-ed the board on the district operation. oper-ation. Some time was also spent in discussing the effects of recent legislition and possible effect on proposed legislation on affairs of the district, when Heber M. Sevy, State Representative from Iron County, met with the board members for an informal discussion discus-sion of legislation affecting the schools. |
