Show B AC Broncos Tip Dixie Flyers. 33 - 6 In Fast Battle in Dixie Sun Bowl The Branch Agricultural col-lege col-lege football team wound up its 1951 season with a convincing 33 to 6 victory over a determined and scrappy, but outclassed Dixie Dix-ie college team in the St. George Sun bowl Monday afternoon. Battling on even terms throughout through-out the first half, the Broncos held a narrow 7 to 0 lead at half time, but exploded In the second half to score four more touchdowns holding the Flyers scoreless until the final minute of the game. The opening minutes of the game developed into three or four exchanges of punts, until Doug McShane, BAC quarterback, hit halfback Hoy Jones with a long pass that carried to the Dixie 12-yard line for the first scoring threat of the game. The Broncos failed to capitalize on the advantage, however, when other passes failed to click, and relinquished the ball. Just before the end of the quarter the Flyers tried a quick kick and Clyde Turner returned the ball to the Dixie 10, which was the start of the first scoring drive. As the second quarter opened the Broncos drove to the Dixie 12, but were set back with a 15 yard penalty. This did not stop them, however, and on the next play they drove to the five, and McShane passed to Dayle Rust for the first touchdown of the game, and Tex Everett converted con-verted to give the Broncos a 7 to 0 lead. Following another exchange of punts, the Flyers uncorked a lateral, forward pass play that was good for 40 yards and it placed them on the Bronco eight yard line. The pass was thrown by Clay Neilson to Gordon Sprague. The threat was Immediately Immed-iately stopped however, when Bob Crane intercepted a Dale Frehner pass on the goal line and returned it to the 50-yard stripe. The Broncos lost the ball soon after however, and the Flyers Fly-ers raced back to the Bronco 20 on another long pass from Neil-son Neil-son to Sprague, and a 15-yard penalty against the Broncos put the ball on the B A C five yard line, but the half ended before the Flyers could capitalize on the break. As the second half opened Dixie threatened again. The Flyers recovered a BAC fumble and then Neilson passed to Dudley Dud-ley Rowley to put the ball on the BAQ 7. Two plays later, how. ever, the Flyers fumbled an attempted at-tempted lateral and Rust recovered re-covered for the BAC on the Bronco one yard line. At this point the Broncos started a drive, and with Everett, Jones and Ro-met Ro-met Scott alternating in carrying carry-ing the ball marched the length of the field to score, with Everett Ever-ett going over for the touchdown. A 1 varA ruinaltu at srA nnlnl in this drive failed to stop the hard charging Broncos. Everett Ever-ett also kicked the point to give the BAC a 14 to 0 lead. Dixie, still determined, started a drive along the ground, finally fin-ally breaking Earl Grant loose on a lateral from Neilson, for a long gain that put the ball on the Bronco 11. However, the Flyers offense again bogged down and BAC took possession. Two or thre plays later Scott swept around his own left end behind beautiful blocking to go 75 yards to cross the goal line standing up. However, another 15-yard penalty nullified this and moved the ball back to the BAC 35. Undaunted the Broncos struck again, two long passes from McShane to Rust getting the touchdown back, and giving giv-ing the Broncos a 20 to 0 lead. Minutes later the Broncos pulled one of the prettiest plays of the game to score again. With the Broncos in possession on the midfield stripe McShane dropped back and hit Kent Myers with (Continued on Page 13) BAG -DIXIE GAME (Continued from Page Four) a pass good for about 20 yards, and he lateralled to Jones who raced the remaining 30 yards without a hand being laid on him. Score, BAC 26, Dixie 0. With time running out Coach Dave Gates began to sweep the Bronco bench with little regards for who was playing where, and the Flyers capitalized on this opportunity op-portunity and after intercepting a pass, scored on a pass from Neilson to Rowley, but the try for extra point was blocked. , This score was made with 44 seconds remaining to be played, the Broncos instead of freezing the ball with a 26 to 6 lead, decided de-cided to try for another touchdown touch-down and Stan Mackay heaved a long pass to Crane who broke into the clear and crossed the goal line with 18 seconds left, and Everett made his third conversion con-version to run the score to 33 to 6. The victory gave the Broncos a season's record of 5 wins, one 1 loss and 2 ties. |
