Show Consumption of Four Utah Canned Foods Sets Record Utah growers of apples, cherries, cher-ries, peaches and snap beans have helped push U. S. consumption consump-tion of canned varieties of the four foods to record levels. A recent report of the U. S. Department De-partment of Agriculture revealed that per capita consumption of the four canned foods reached new highs last year. According to the department's study, the average av-erage American now eats annually an-nually these record amounts of canned foods: 2.2 pounds of apple ap-ple products, 1.8 pounds of cherries, cher-ries, 5.8 pounds of peaches and 3.4 pounds of snap beans. The increasing popularity of the foods is in line with the doubling of the per-capita consumption con-sumption of all canned foods in the past 25 years, reported the American Can company, which perfected the convenient metal container which makes seasonal foods staple year-round items. Another example of the upward up-ward trend in consumption of canned foods is tomatoes, Utah's No. 1 vegetable, which has reached the highest mark since 1943, with a rate of 5.1 pounds per person. Federal crop reports list 1951 production in Utah at 493,000 bushels of apples, 6,400 tons of cherries, 983,000 bushels of peaches, 2,(i00 tons of snap beans and 102,500 tons of tomatoes. |
