Show Sheriff Issues Many Tree-Cutting Permits Christmas tree cutting permits issued by the Iron County Sheriffs Sher-iffs office Wednesday totaled nearly 4.000, according to Sheriff Arthur Nelson. Of the total only about one-fourth were issued to persons wishing to cut from one to 10 trees, the remainder going to persons interested in commercial commer-cial cutting in numbers up to 500. After reaching a high point two weeks ago, the rate of purchase of the cutting permits has drop-pod drop-pod off sharply in the past few days, the sheriff said. Cutting is probitibted on national na-tional forest land, while for cutting cut-ting on privately owned land prior agreement with owners is required before the state permits sold by the county are granted. State permits cost one cent for each tree cut. In past years illegal cutting on national forest and range lands has been quite common, those with state permits sometimes some-times encroaching on the public domain. The new arrangement of requiring permission of private land owners prior to issue of the permits has helped to lessen the practice, Sheriff Nelson reported. Cut trees must bear the state tag. |
