Show IT "T TT TC Fight Started Against Narcotics Use The American Legion Posts of the Western States have struck a blow at the most vicious racket in American Ameri-can history - the peddling of narcotics. The organization leaders took preliminary steps at a very important meeting meet-ing at Las Vegas, Nev., recently. , Several hundred top leaders of the American Legion, its auxiliary, the Forty and Eight, and the Eight and Forty, For-ty, from eleven western states, Alaska and Hawaii, in attendance at-tendance at their annual child welfare conference laid plans for a legislative attack on the nationwide dope ring. Out of this conference came plans for an organized legislative drive during 1952 in Alaska, Arizona, California, Califor-nia, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington and Wyoming for uniform uni-form state laws with real teeth to end the fast growing spread of sales of narcotics to juveniles. Plans, were also made to secure enactment of uniform municipal ordinances ordi-nances which would classify the illegal use of narcotics as a contagious disease subject to quarantine so that city health authorities would have the power of mandatory treatment of addicts. If the American Legion and American Legion auxiliary auxil-iary can accomplish these objectives, it will result in a major set-back to the activities of drug peddlers and earn the undying gratitude of the entire nation. Everyone should support this new Americon Legion program which was adopted by its 33rd national convention held recently in Miami, Fla. |
