Show Field Training Meets Determine Deer, Forage Count Pa rowan Canyon and Cottonwood Cotton-wood Canyon were the scenes of a series of field training meets held on April 21 and 22 to determine deter-mine deer use per acre and forage for-age consumed, according to Albert Al-bert Albertson, suorvisor of the Dixie National Forest. New scienti'fic methods were demonstrated to the supervisors and rangers by Mont Lewis and Robert Latimore of the Ogden Forest Service regional office. Through weight measurements and pellet counts made in the area the trends in use of vegetative vege-tative growth can be determined and a permanent record made for future reference, it was pointed point-ed out. These meetings revealed that a heavy use by deer during the winter would, if continued, eventually even-tually kill off even the sagebrush sage-brush and would result in a considerable con-siderable loss by starvation. The actual count revealed that in one locality a rate of 21 deer days per acre was recorded, which is extremely high. |
