According to Coach Gates it is expected that upon the completion comple-tion of spring quarter registration registra-tion approximately 33 thinclads 'will be actively engaged in track workouts preparatory to early April meets. Four track events are in the making for the Broncos this year according to Coach Gates, including in-cluding two dual meets with Dixie college as well as participation partici-pation in the B Y U invitational meet at Provo, and the ICAC meet which will be held at Westminster West-minster college in Salt Lake City. Dates have not been announced an-nounced as vet except for the first of the B A C Dixie dual meets, to be held in St. George April 8. However, the Bronco trackmen will begin time trials as early as March 20, according to Coach Gates. Some of the hopefuls already working out at the B A C are A. J. Poulson, who last year captured cap-tured three first in the ICAC meet in the 100. 220 dashes and low hurdles. Lewis Chatterley of Kanab and formerly rf B Y U will be outstanding in the pole vault event, having cleared 12 feet in last year's meets. Don Keeney of Kentucky will bolster the squad in the strinting events while Brent Palmer of Cedar City will be called upon for extra depth in the quarter mile. Ronald Ron-ald Hone of Millard high school has been working out in the hurdle hur-dle events. Lost to the service and graduation gradua-tion will be such stars as Romer Scott, last year's discus winner; Lynn Esplln, 440 yard ace; Hardy Har-dy Phelps, hurdler; Bruce Jensen, Phil Rawlinson, Hal Williams and Stan Mackay, Coach Gates stated. Last year the Bronco trackmen took second place in the ICAC meet at Ricks college in Rexburg, Idaho, after winning the conference confer-ence for six consecutive seasons prior to 1952. The Broncos will be out for another conference win this year. Coach Gates pointed out, however, how-ever, that the Broncos will compete com-pete In three fields of athletics this spring, track, tennis and baseball while Ricks, defending ICAC champions plan to con, centrate on only one sport, track, disregarding a full spring pro-, pro-, gram for all athletes. 1 |
