Show Janta Clara Emerges Victor in First Inter-itake Inter-itake Explorers Championship Tournament I Santa Clara, winners of the St. leorge Stake Explorer League, hrough sharp-shooting and de- liberate team play, gained the ( championship in the first inter-stake inter-stake Explorer tournament staged stag-ed in Cedar City last Friday and Saturday evening. According to Gordon Jones, Cedar Ce-dar Stake athletic director, the original schedule for the tourney included only four teams, one from Cedar and one from each of the Zion, Beaver and St. George stakes. At a late date, however, teams from Pioche and Milford requested permission to join the affair and although they did not compete for the championship cham-pionship they played both Friday Fri-day and Saturday evening in exhibition ex-hibition games.. The College Ward and a combination team from the Second and Third wards of Cedar City was organized to compete against the newcomers. The first evening of play the Cedar First Ward, Cedar Stake entry, was pushed out of the running run-ning by the strong Santa Clara crew by a score of 50 to 41 in the feature game of the night. Cedar First had not suffered a defeat during the season. Other games Friday saw the Second-Third defeat Milford 49 to 22 in the exhibition while Beaver Bea-ver Third took the measure of Hurricane South by a score of 33 to 25 in the championship race. Saturday night the Santa Clara crew took a one-sided victory from the Beaver team, winning by a score of 63 to 38. In one of the closest battles of j the tournament the Hurricane South crew handed the Cedar First a two-point defeat with a last quarter rally. Final score was 18 to 4G. In the exhibition games Milford Mil-ford pulled a win out of the fire by defeating a determined Pioche team by a score of 46 to 41 in a thrilling game that saw the margin of points never exceed six. All players were treated to punch and cookies at the L D S Seminary at the close of the Saturday Sat-urday evening games. Mia Maids and scouts of Cedar City prepared pre-pared the refreshments and served at the affair. |
