Tonight's schedule will find the Cedar City Master Singers meeting the St. George Firemen and the Bradshaw Chevrolet team of Cedar City meeting the Pickett Lumber team of St. George in first round games. Two second round games will follow, El Rey and Enterprise playing first with the Record Kids tangling with the Elks in the final encounter of the evening. The tournament opened last night with the El Rey Cafe team taking the measure of the B. P. W. team from St. George In a one-sided battle. The Cedar team won by a (Continued on Back Face) Softball Tourney (Continued from Front Page) score of 18 to 1. Rulon Woodbury, El Rey Cafe pitcher, had complete control throughout, with his team mates giving him good support The V. P. W. pitcher did a good Job against the heavy El Rey hitters, hit-ters, but he got very poor support. The throwing of the visiting players was especially bad with repeated wild throw allowing the local players play-ers to scoot around rtie bases at will. The Elks won from the Weyl Zuckerman team by a score of 11 to 9, but only after the visitors had come dangerously close io pulling the game out of the fire. It looked like a walk-away for the Elks, with York Nelson mowing down the visiting vis-iting batters, but the potato grow ers rallied In the final innings after af-ter trailing 9 to 3 in the early stages. Enterprise took a commanding early lead against the powerful Dixie Nine from St. Oeorge, and with Staley, brilliant young Enter prise chucker on the mound it looked look-ed like the Dixie Nine were not even in the game during the early Innings. However, the Enterprise players "let down" allowing their opixmcnts to rally and close the gap for a final score of 12 to 7 In the final game of the evening even-ing the Iron County Record Kids domlated the play with Hurricane, until they had they usual "bad" Inning. The Kids had an 8 to 0 lead, having staged a 5 run up -rising In the first Inning, featuring home runs by Miles Urie and Dan Corry. However, they almost threw their game away, when they "blew sky-high" sky-high" In the fourth Inning to allow Hurricane to score six runs after af-ter two were out. The Kids won by a score of 11 to 7. A good crowd turned out for the games in spite of Hie fact that the weather wan rather chilly, and big crowds are expected for the semifinals semi-finals and finals tonight and tomorrow tomor-row night. |
