Show Nine Iron County Boys Attending Boys' State Nine Iron county boys, six ol them from Cedar City, and the other three from Parowan, are attending at-tending the third annual Utah Boys' State at Camp W. O. Williams Wil-liams at Jordan Narrows. The camp, which opened Sunday, July 6, and which will run until Saturday, July 19, is under the direction and sponsorship spon-sorship of the American Legion Department of Utah. As in the past, the various civic organizations throughout the state are sponsoring the boys who are attending the camp. Of the group from Iron county, Yorke Jones and O'Dell Arris were sent by the local Elks lodge, Paul Wood by the Cedar City Rotary Club, MacLean Sim-kins Sim-kins by the Junior Chamber of Commerce, Boyd Edwards by the Cedar City unit of the American Legion Auixliary. Allan Corry by the local post of the American Legion, Le-gion, Robert Rowley by the Parowan Paro-wan Exchange Club, Raymond Wllt-sey Wllt-sey by Parowan City, and Bryce Orton by the Parowan post of the American Legion. Boys' State is a plan for training boys in the aspects or government and strives to educate the boys attending at-tending in the duties, privileges, rights and responsibilities of American Ameri-can citizenship. To be selected, a boy must show outstanding qualifications qualifi-cations in character, service and leadership and must have a serious attitude toward an intensive citizenship citi-zenship training program.! The program for the 15-day encampment, en-campment, has been built around a three point system i First, the lessons les-sons in citizenship and the American Ameri-can system of government by precept; pre-cept; second, the lessons in citizenship citizen-ship the boys will learn through practice; third, the health and body building program provided by instruction in-struction in many phases of athletics ath-letics and first aid. Approximately 80 men, all qualified experts in their fields, have contributed their services as counselors, Instructors and lecturers. While in camp, the boys will set up their own city, county and state governments by free democratic elections, with organizations complete com-plete and identical with the Utah systems. The officers elected then perform their functions under the model Boys' State constitution whlcn is patterned on the constitution of Utah. Ui'il: -. |
