Show FOOD FOR BERI-BERI. Beri-Beri, the deadly and dreaded eastern plague, is very likely to attack American, soldiers in the Philippines. In 1898 it struck a garrison of 260 French Infantry in Tonkin and killed ten men of fifty-three cases. Dr. Laurent, however, succeeded In checking the disease at its height simply sim-ply by "feeding the men fat. A few weeks later a longer and more severe epidemic in the Polo-Condore military prison was cured by feeding a fatty diet to the convicts. "From the moment this diet ' was given to individuals indi-viduals still in health not a single fresh, attack occurred," says the report. It was Dr. Bremaud who in 1S92 discovered dis-covered that beri-beri was due to deficient de-ficient fatty food, occurring in hot climates cli-mates as scurvy does in temperate climates cli-mates when food is not varied enough. Thus does a big bugbear vanish before be-fore a little scientific common sense. Beri-beri is no longer the frightful thing it was. For ages it has slain as it would among the sluggish Orientals. |
