Show MINER KILLED AT EUREKA Eureka, June 20. An Italian by tha name of Ernest Benaglis was killed at about S o'clock this morning by falling down a perpendicular shaft, a distance Of. fiftv-sevkjn feet, in the Solid Moultoont f' claim, belonging to the Bullion-Beck Mining cumpuny and situated probably two-thirds of a mile south of tho old workinir:. Maro had recently ciuit the employ of the Centennial-Kureka, and applied to Superintendent Farnsworth this morning-tor morning-tor work. His request was granted, and he was given instructions to go up to tha' new discovery and bgin operations. Shortly afterwards he appeared at tho Solid Moultoon and entered the tunnel. The 7 o'clock shift, consisting of three men, had gone down the shatt about an hour previous, and were working at tho side of the shaft about half way down. The man proceeded in the tunnel, when Jacob Brandt, shift boss and engineer at the donkey engine, called to Moro not to go farther, as the shaft was open and h; misht walk into it. The Italian could' understand but little English and probably prob-ably mistook Brandt's words for Instruc tions lo ko on. us me remain vtic unheeded. un-heeded. Brandt called a second time to stop, but by this time the miner had reached the opening and was falling to the bottom. The men who were working in stopes at the side of the winze, heard the body strike the bottom, and were horrified when they realized what had happened. If these men had not been working-where working-where they were, it is safe to say one or more of them might have been killed. The unfortunate maa lived about thirty minutes after he was picked up. Hi bodv was horribly mangled, the back' being broken In two or three placer anif; his limbs badly mutilated. Maro had worked in different parts of: the district about two years He quit, the Centennial-Eureka mine Monday because be-cause he thought it was dangerous there.. He was 33 years old, was unmarried, and' has no known relatives in this country. An inquest was held over the remains this afternoon, the jury returning a verdict ver-dict that death resulted from falling down a shaft through the neglegance of the deceased. Funeral services will bo. held tomorrow afternoon at 3 o'clock. |
