Show . DEATH IZST HOTEL FIRE. One Life Lost and Thrilling Escapes Were Many. South Bend, Ind., June 20. One man was killed, six seriously injured and a number of others slightly burned in the destruction by fire this morning of the Morrison hotel, located on Vistula avenue. The fire, which is supposed to have been of incendiary origin, started shortly short-ly after 1 o'clock and was followed almost al-most immediately by a terrific explosion. explo-sion. Before the fire department arrived ar-rived the whole building was in flames and many of the guests of the hotel barely escaped with their lives. Mrs. F. Smith, an actress, was blown through one of the windows and had one of her legs broken, besides being seriously burned about the head. Her husband, F. Smith, cut off from escape by the stairway, picked up their little child and, leaning far out of the third story . window, dropped the infant into the arms of a fireman on the walk below. be-low. The child was unharmed. Mr. Smith was rescued by the firemen. |
