The air photo above shows the Columbia Steel plant at Ironton, a subsidiary of United States Steel Corporation. Operations of the Steel company have increased the payrolls of the state $1,000,000 yearly, have augmented aug-mented the movementxf freight by 976,000 tons annually and brought to the railroads an additional $2,-000,000 $2,-000,000 each twelve month period. The annual expenditure for supplies sup-plies approximates $1,000,000. Besides the pipe manufacturing operations, Ironton now has 56 coke ovens, with a 15 ton coal capacity each. Coal coaked per day equals 1550 tons, producing 840 tons of metallurgical coke, 18,600,000 cubic feet of gas, 18,600 gallons of tar, together with ammonium sulphate and motor fuel. Fifty per cent of the ammonium sulphate is shipped to Japan and the Hawaiian Islands, and 50 per cent is consumed on the Pacific Coast. The Blast furnace will average approximately 480 tons of pig iron 1 per day, and consumed 820 tons of. ore. The ore which yields these materials is drawn from mines ta Carbon County and Iron County, which are owned and operated by the company. |
