Show Escalante Events Marilyn Jackson The weather forecasters called it fair to hot in southern Utah, but it was lightning, thunder, flash floods and marble-sized hail in Escalante. There was enough flood water in Alvey Wash to cover the bridge that goes to the south fields. Along with the lightning, there were a few sparks of enthusiasm as families met for their reunions. The Klyn Haws family camped at North Creek where they were joined by 60 members of the Starns Mecham family. All were there, except for Kim Mecham, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Mecham, who is serving an LDS mission in Scotland. Starns Mecham also had the privilege of blessing and naming his new great-grandson great-grandson Michael John Dube who is the son of Denise Alvey Dube and her husband. The descendants of Christian Moosman met in Boulder for lunch and reminiscing. Glen Moosman came from Salt Lake City and reports re-ports his new book about the Moosman family in America is underway. Also at the reunion were Greita Moosman and daughter Bridget Brid-get Moosman who came from Arizona, Ari-zona, but as Greita was born in Germany, she was familiar with the Swiss origin of the family. Mr. and Mrs. Johnny Michelangelo Michelan-gelo returned to California after attending at-tending the baptism of grandson Michael Woolsey, son of Mr. and Mrs. Eric Woolsey. Heather Spencer, daughter of Sam Spencer and Mr. and Mrs. Louis Bernardo, and Sena Barnson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Barry Barnson, were also baptized Friday evening. Grand-paents Grand-paents Mr. and Mrs. Riley Barnson of Kingston came for the event Mr. and Mrs. Don Coleman, Mr. and Mrs. Lynn Gates, and Mr. and Mrs. Theron Mitchell are home after af-ter a two-week tour. They traveled to the Tetons and through Yellowstone, Yellow-stone, stopping in Cody, Wyo., to see Custer's last battlefield, before going through the Black Hills of the Dakotas where they took in Mt. Rushmore, and saw the devastation of the drought on crops there. They returned through Denver and report having a wonderful time. Donna Bailey is home after many weeks in Montana visiting relative.!! Vickie Coleman and daughter Bonnie Coleman received a schola-ship schola-ship to attend a week-long seminar and workshop on drugs and slcohol. They were fascinated with all the new information and programs available. Townspeople' were disappointed to see "The Merc" close its doors, but happy to learn of the birth of a new baby boy June 24 to managers, Mr. and Mrs. Theron Jensen of Mesquite. Mr. and Mrs. Vergean Porter returned re-turned from a week's stay in Arizona Ari-zona where they purchased and set up a winter home. Son Clint Porter, Velma Boulter and Mina Porter went to Provo where they joined the Haws Porter family for the mission report of Ruscene Haws, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Haws Porter who is home from an LDS mission to Houston. Mr. and Mrs. Dick Lyman and son Kendall spent last weekend with the Randel Lymans. Kendall enters the mission training center July 13 for an LDS mission to Chili. His farewell was held Sunday in Bountiful. Kendall is the seventh of the Randel Lyman grandchildren to enter the missionfield; granddaughter grand-daughter Sue Greer, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jim Greer, is currently serving in Ecuador. They also learned that grandson Warren Woolsey, son of M.r and Mrs. Milton Woolsey, was chosen from California to compete in a nation wide tour of drum and bugle players. play-ers. The group of 120 that he belongs be-longs to will be in Ogden in August Au-gust before ending their tour in Kansas City where national champions cham-pions will be selected. Mr. and Mrs. Doug Austin returned re-turned from California where they have been touring the area and visiting. The Ed Littlefields of Henrieville and the Frank Leaks and Ron Harrises Har-rises traveled to California for the wedding of Lindy Leak and Kurt Boscoe on June 25. Lindy is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Chales Leak and oldest granddaughter of the Frank Leaks. They like to come here for fishing and deer hunting, but are going to make their home in California. Donald Cowles brought his daughter Jennifer Cowles from Salt Lake City to spend some of the summer with grandparents, the Orvil Cowles. The new 4-way stop signs at the Jerold JuddBill Griffin corner are supposed to stop the confusion and help us decide if we're coming or going! Preparations are being made to demolish the Lewis Griffin home on Main Street. The Ivan Willises, Gail Baileys and Ernie Snyders went to North Creek fishing. The Frank Venutis, Wade Barneys Bar-neys and Tom Jacksons were among Escalanteans who were in Henrieville for their July 4th barbecue and fireworks. The Jack-sons Jack-sons then went to Torrey where the community is celebrating its 100th birthday. The family of LoReta Spencer traveled to Teasdale for the funeral services of Jerry Hamm, husband of Vickie Spencer Hamm. Also learned of the death of Donna M. Scyfarth Alvey, a former school teacher in Escalante who passed away at age 83 in a Salt Lake City hospital. Her husband, Ward Alvey, survives her and is also a former Escalante resident. Floyd Davis, brother-in-law of Neta Haycock, died also. Dirk Durfey is home recuperating recuper-ating after an emergency appendectomy. Zclla Alvey is convalescing at the home of her daughter Gayle Stonehockcr after stomach ulcer surgery, and Kathleen Williams is managing nicely after a fall which broke her leg. Mr. and Mrs. Tony Larsen came for a few days as did Helen Pruit who is visiting at the Melvin . Alveys. Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Lott spent a few days home before traveling trav-eling away for various appointments. appoint-ments. Julie Droubay Higdon and husband Bob Higdon came to see friends in the area. They were able to see long-time friend Denise Alvey Dube who came for their family reunion. Deoh Alvey, Leah Griffin, Hilda Roundy and Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Alvey traveled to Panguitch Lake for a meeting with the Council on Aging. Gayla Cardon came to assist mother, Nell Wooley in her move to St. George. Mr. and Mrs. Dale Patton hosted a party of friends and neighbors to celebrate her first social security check. Their son Richard Patton was married July 9. He and his new bride Patty met in Hawaii where he .. was working and she is originally from British Columbia, Canada. They are presently house sitting for Montel Jordan Revord while she's away, but are planning to purchase a home in the area as Richard is working at the sawmill. Montel and new husband Bud Revord are spending the summer in Michigan after their honeymoon in Florida. Mr. and Mrs. Joe Boardman have been coming to Escalante for many summers for fishing and water sports. They recently purchased the Phil Dendell home where they plan to spend summers. Their winter home is in Kingman, Ariz. Tonya Judd, daughter of Superintendent Jerold Judd, was also to compete, but had been helping raise funds for the drill y team to travel to Japan and so had to leave for Japan before the competition. The Ernie Snyders drove to Page, Ariz., which was halfway to pick up granddaughter Erin McNeill of Mesa, Ariz., who is going to stay with them for part of the summer. The children and grandchildren of Mr. and Mrs. Hal Shurtz met at Peterson Pasture for their family reunion. All of the family were there except Julee Appleby who lives in Wisconsin. Son Kerry Shurtz was fortunate to have time away from the National Guard duty at Dugway Proving Ground to join the family. New Forest Service Trainee Mary Ann Keller and her husband Chris Keller are residing in the Scott Nannangae home this summer. sum-mer. Mr. and Mrs. Dan Tucker have had their friends, Jim Hurd of Es-condido, Es-condido, Calif.; Mr. and Mrs. Ron Carr, their son Garrett Carr and his friend Todd Arthur of San Diego visiting them in their new home. The new high school is progressing nicely. Cabinets, floor and ceiling tile and carpet are being iiiaum&u. imp nw jdiiuui u uic high school will be Milan Munson and at the elementary, Jeris Liles. Quay Simons retired from government gov-ernment work leaving the Bureau of Land Management on July 1. He and brother Jerald Simons joined Cal Porter and about 20 scouts for a week scout camp at Maple Dell in Payson Canyon. Wife Carol Simons Si-mons has been attending college at Southern Utah State College and will be finishing next week. Mr. and Mrs. Sharon Dale Marsh made a hurried trip to Cedar City after learning that Shirley's mother Evelyn Eve-lyn Heap had fallen, breaking her shoulder blade. Shirley Marsh stayed to be with her while Sharon Dale returned to help with chores and hay. Vardon Woolsey is now home convalescing. He had traveled to Panguitch and on to Salt Lake City for medical tests. Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Wilson of Boulder and their son Robert Wilson Wil-son joined Mr. and Mrs. Bill Vidrine, Wanlass Alvey, the Dale Wilsons, Glenn Wilsons, Leo Wilsons and Dale Wilsons in St. George at the wedding reception of Sherman Wilson and new bride Amy Parks who were married July 1. Helen Shurtz had a visit from her sister Amy and husband Ferris Clegg of Richfield. Bradley Griffin and family of Salt Lake City came to see sister Shelly Barney and the Griffin relatives in the area. Richard Porter of Bountiful was here for a few days with mother Elise Ott. Scott Pollock brought new wife, the former Francine Woodard and her brother Jim Woodard to help grandmother Ethel Pollock celebrate her 85th birthday. |
