Show 15 Garfield County Seniors Compete In Annual Sterling Scholar Contest Lenza Wilson Three Bryce Valley High and two Escalante High School seniors were just announced as contenders in the Sterling Scholar competiuon on April 4, 1991, at Southern Utah University in Cedar City. One hundred and twenty-seven students representing 13 high schools and five school districts will compete for awards and honors in the Thirteenth Annual Southern Utah Sterling Scholar competition. Competing from Bryce Valley High School in science will be Kenyon Piatt, son of Kenneth and Artoise Piatt of Henrieville; in business education is Gaylynn Shakespeare, daughter of Tom and ' ' j i ' " ' j? f v Nephi Carter Gay Shakespeare, Cannonville; and in general scholarship, Jon Brown, son of George R. and Cecelia M. Brown, Henrieville. Two Escalante seniors competing compet-ing are Lenza R. Wilson, son of Dale and Susan Wilson, Escalante, in visual arts, and Nephi Carter, son of Keith and Linda Carter of Escalante, for the general scholarship. scholar-ship. Finalists who will be involved in the final competition are from the following high schools: Beaver, Bryce Valley, Cedar City, Dixie, Enterprise, Escalante, Hurricane, Hurri-cane, Kanab, Milford, Panguitch, Parowan, Pine View, and Valley. Twelve categories of the competition compe-tition include English, Performing Arts, Mathematics, Social Science, Science, Foreign Language, Industrial Indus-trial Education, Home Economics, Business Education, Music, Visual Arts, and General Scholarship. Final judging is based upon scholarship, leadership and citizenship, citizen-ship, with 50 percent of each participant's partic-ipant's final score derived from his or her scholarship abilities, 25 percent per-cent from leadership and the remaining remain-ing 25 percent coming from citizenship citi-zenship qualities demonstrated by the student There will be three judges in each category which come from local lo-cal communities, Dixie College or Southern Utah State College. |
