Show PHS Students Third In State Science Bowl Seven Panguitch High School students captured a 3rd place win in statewide Science Bowl competition at Brigham Young University on March 16. Representing Garfield County School District and Panguitch High School for the first time at the annual an-nual event, the team of young science, math and computer whizzes, whiz-zes, came, home with a victory that made their advisors and parents proud. Students from 30 schools from around the state were broken into eight groups. Panguitch was placed in group two with Pineview, Dug-way Dug-way and Morgan. The tournament was set up much like the popular television show "Jeopardy" where questions are randomly selected by a computer and the first student who buzzes in has the first crack at answering the question. If wrong, the other team could steal the points if its student could answer the question correctly. PHS students were divided into two teams. One team, consisting of Stacee Yardley, Justin Fischer and Skip Houston, made a terrific showing. They won 80-30 in the first preliminary game against Morgan. In the second pre-round match, Panguitch faced Dugway and defeated them soundly by 30 points at 90-70. In the final prelim, Panguitch Pan-guitch trounced Pineview High School 100-70. With the three wins, the Panguitch Pan-guitch team advanced to the single elimination semi-final playoffs. In a close game with Uintah, they won 70-30 which put them into the finals with winners from the other three groups. West High School, Timpview High School and Bear River High School. Panguitch defeated de-feated Bear River 70-30 and was defeated de-feated by Timpview 90-30. They also lost to West 130-20, placing them 3rd overall in the state. Panguitch High's other team, composed of Lloyd Brinkerhoff, Andrea Howard, Cassie Howard and Michael Hulet, competed against Wayne High School, plowing them under 110-40, but lost to Pineview 100-90 in an exciting sudden death encounter and then lost another close one to Bear River 90-60. Although they actually scored more points in the preliminary round than most of the other teams, including in-cluding the other Panguitch team, they were eliminated on a win-loss record. Science teacher Bart Reynolds, and math instructer Frank Houston were extremely pleased that these students were able to compete with students from the top schools in the state and do so well. Reynolds said he would like to start a science bowl in Panguitch in addition to his science fair to give students a chance to excell in science. He pointed out that there are many opportunities op-portunities for science scholarships to assist more students achieve their dreams of college. Both Reynolds and Houston said that the students' accomplishments reflect on the entire faculty and student stu-dent body at Panguitch High School. Students were strong not only in science, math and computer fields, but were very articulate, self-confident self-confident and well-rounded individuals. X : - ! : .
