Show Week-Long Fire Fighting Training For Area Men BRYCE CANYON NATIONAL NA-TIONAL PARK During the week of Sept. 30-Oct. 4, a structural structu-ral fire training course was held at Bryce Canyon National Park. Participants Par-ticipants included Park Service personnel from Bryce Canyon, Zion, Capitol Reef and Canyon-lands Canyon-lands National Parks. A number of local volunteers also attended. Merrill Burrows of the Hatch volunteer fire department brought their truck to assist in some of the exercises involving the use of live fire. The instructors were Captain Duane Campbell and Captain Tony Bacon of the Novato Fire Department Depart-ment in California. Between the two of them they have over 50 years of experience in the field of fire safety. The class was divided equally between classroom instruction in-struction during the morning sessions ses-sions and field exercises in the afternoon. Topics covered included fire behavior, be-havior, search and rescue, salvage and overhaul, and fireground operations. oper-ations. The field exercises consisted consis-ted of a smokehouse drill, car fires, a structure fire and petroleum fires. All of these drills involved actual controlled fires with the participants wearing full protective protec-tive equipment, including breathing breath-ing apparatus, in order to combat the blazes. At the conclusuion of the course on Friday, an hour-long written exam was given. All of the participants agreed that the course was very worthwhile and they had gone a long way toward improving their fire fighting skills. |
