Show Escalante Men Appear In Panguitch Court October 3 ESCALANTE -- Two men, arrested ar-rested Sept. 21 in Escalante, appeared ap-peared in court in Panguitch on Thursday, Oct. 3 for preliminary hearings. Additional third degree burglary charges were filed against both men in connection with a burglary at Canyon Country Gas 'n' Goodies in Escalante on Sept. 8. Paul Sorenson, 33, was bound over by Judge Don Tibbs to district court for arraignment on Nov. 7 where he will have an opportunity to enter a plea.. He remains in jail where bail has been set at $30,000. The preliminary hearing for Rick Postlethuwait, 36 was continued contin-ued to Nov. 7. Cedar City attorney Ken Winward, appointed as public defender, will represent Postlethuwait. Postle-thuwait. Postlethuwait, whose bail was set at $5,000, was released on bail from the Garfield County jail on Monday. He is under a court order to stay out of Garfield County except for court appearances. Currently, Postlethuwait is charged with receiving stolen property prop-erty and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, both second degree de-gree felonies; burglary, a third degree de-gree felony; and possession of a dangerous weapon, a class A misdemeanor. mis-demeanor. Sorenson and Postlethuwait were arrested Sept. 21 by Escalante Police Chief Anthony Byron and Garfield County Sheriffs deputy Celeste Bernards. They were allegedly in possession of a gun reportedly linked to a theft at S&C Merc in mid-August. Evidence presented by Garfield County Attorney Wallace Lee at Sorenson's preliminary hearing included in-cluded items alleged to have been stolen from the Escalante convenience conve-nience store, some retrieved from the restaurant at which the two men were originally found in the early morning hours of Sept 21 and the weapon identified as that stolen from S&C Merc in Panguitch. Among those testifying were Escalante chief of police Anthony Byron and Sorenson. Evidence and testimony at the hearing convinced Judge Tibbs there is sufficient evidence linking Sorenson to the Canyon Country Gas 'n' Goodies burglary and the S&C stolen gun to bind him over for arraignment in district court. Sorenson was represented by Garfield County public defender Floyd Holm. |
