' Panguitch City police officer Than Cooper inspects in-spects bicycle of Panguitch Elementary School Nick Reynolds, principal at Panguitch Elementary School, said all 274 students at the school had an opportunity to participate in Tuesday's Bike Safety Rodeo sponsored spon-sored by the Panguitch City Police Department. The all-morning event utilized the time and talents of the entire school staff as well as those - of Police Chief Martin Nay and of-i of-i ficcr Than Cooper. ... i- The prime focus of the rodeo was the registration of bicycles and emphasis on safety in bike riding. Cooper said that approximately 100 new registrations were acquired and student Dallas Barnhurst, Hatch, prior to giving giv-ing him course instructions. Panguitch Students Ride In Bike Safety Rodeo that unsafe equipment in many bikes was pointed out to the owner. Nay and Cooper spent 20 to 30 minutes in each classroom explaining explain-ing factors that can affect bicycle riding enjoyment and teaching students stu-dents to obey traffic rules. Students were told that owning a bicycle is financial responsibility because of the cost. Many times bikes arc a gift from a loved one or often the rider saves for a long time to pay for it. Each year the cost of bikes go up and if riders care for their equipment properly, the money they save can be used for other things. Students were taught to keep a record of their bike's make, model number, color, size, and anything that might make it easy to identify if it is lost or stolen. They were taught how to ride, hand signals, and general road safety. Students were cautioned about leaving their bicycles on sidewalks to impede pedestrian traffic. Students, Stu-dents, parents and teachers agreed that the Bicycle Safety Rodeo was a unique and important way to learn about bicycles and bicycle operation. |
