Show Increase In New Jobs Reported In Garfield Co. In Utah's southwestern district, Garfield County had the best per-J per-J centage increase in nonfarm jobs during the second quarter of 1988. The 30 new jobs came on the strength of 10 new durable goods manufacturing jobs and 20 new service jobs, most of them tourist-related. tourist-related. Statistics and information provided pro-vided by the Utah Department of Employment Security's Labor Market Information Report show t that for the five-county district of Beaver, Garfield, Kane, Iron, and Washington counties, the jobless rate dropped from 6.1 percent in second quarter 1987 to 5.0 percent in second quarter 1988. Nonfarm jobs increased by 400 over first quarter 1987 with services and manufacturing creating the most new jobs. Although building construction f valuation dropped to $14.9 million in second quarter 1988 from $20.2 million in second quarter 1987, tourist room rent collections increased in-creased by 32.1 percent to stand at $6.2 million and initial filings for unemployment compensation fell 11.8 percent. For the second quarter, construction activity in Garfield County was only slightly below last year's level with $512,000 compared to $562,900. Seven new homes (two fewer than last year) were built during the second quarter, quar-ter, with one in Boulder, one in Bryce Valley, one in Escalante and four in the unincorporated areas of the county. New nonresidential construction, on the strength of $100,000 in new store construction, construc-tion, ended the quarter $50,000 ahead of last year. (See JOBS Page 3) JOBS Continued From Page 1 ' For the civilian labor force during dur-ing the quarter in Garfield County, only 7.1 percent were unemployed compared with 9.3 percent for 1987. Federal government jobs showed a loss of two jobs, state government a loss of one, and local government a gain of two. The Job Service office processed 179 new job applications, up 96.7 percent from the same quarter in 1987. There were 298 job openings (up 106.9 percent) and 284 job placements (up 107.3 percent). In unemployment insurance activity ac-tivity for the quarter, $36,200 in I benefits were paid against $50,900 for the same quarter in 1987, a reduction re-duction of 28.9 percent. Tourist room sales from December De-cember 1987 through February 1988 were $194,800 compared with $129,400, up 50.6 percent New car and truck sales were up during the quarter by 47.4 percent Garfield County's 1986 population popula-tion of 4,100 ranked 25th in the state of 29 counties; the population for 1987 was listed as 4,050. The county's per capita personal income for 1987 was listed as $9,447 compared with the state per capita income of $11,246, for 84 percent of the state per capital income. This was down a little from 1986 when the per capita income in-come for Garfield County was ( $9,819 or 89 percent of the state per capita income of $10,986. |
