Show Police Dog Wins In Competition "One-Yankee Pooch" may well be the future radio designation of "Toby," a two-year-old 60-pound German Shepherd who is the only official "police" dog in Garfield County. Toby, less than a year in police service, shows off both his awards he received for winning first place in a recent West Valley City police Toby represented the county last week in West Valley City where he took a first place in the official Police Service Dog Contest held Sept. 23-24. Deputy Sheriff Kevin Moore says the animal is a "super dog, " and answers commands except when off-duty. well-trained dogs against each other, with Toby taking his first place honors in the junior division, a category for dogs with less than one year's experience. The contest covered suspect search, drug search, evidence search, tracking, aggressive apprehension, obedience, and an obstacle course. Toby's trainer, Garfield County Sheriffs Deputy Kevin Moore is proud of his highly trained partner. Toby was purchased by the county for $1,000 and has had two special training sessions that cost $1,000 each. The young animal has already taken part in five searches. He is totally trustworthy around both other adults and young people says Moore, his constant companion. Moore says Toby is "an Alpo dog" and he plans to take "Deputy Toby" around to the local schools to demonstrate how well behaved and how well trained the county's investment in-vestment really is. Extremely responsive re-sponsive to Moore, Toby is a friendly, normal dog who goes into his "police mode" only on command com-mand from Moore. In Garfield County, radio designations desig-nations for Sheriffs deputies all begin with "One-Yankee. . .", "One-Yankee-One for the sheriff, "One-Yankee-Two" for the chief deputy, "One-Yankee-Three" for Moore, so "One-Yankee-Pooch," suggested for Toby seems appropriate. Anyone hearing a friendly "arf-arf ' over the radio will know who is responding to the call. |
