Show Escalante Cemetery , Improvements Begun ESCALANTE Improvements at Escalante Cemetery are well underway under direction of members of the Escalante Cemetery Committee. Many hours were spent tilling the ground and preparing the soil for planting of grass seed after the Memorial Day holiday weekend. All grave sites were to be leveled off and old flowers removed to permit planting and mowing of grass. The committee plans purchase of a mower, trimmers and other necessary equipment. Improvements on the agenda include enlarging the cemetery on the north side which will require some new fencing and more sprinkler pipe to add to that already acquired. At the time the cemetery is enlarged, the new section will be laid out in plats, with all improvements included. Flower pots or planters will be required to be built into the cement or headstones to accomodate mowers. A nominal fee will be agreed upon for plots or opening and closing of graves. The service has been free in the past. Roads will be graveled with hopes of eventually blacktopping them at a ' later time. A cinder block storage building should be built, committee members agree, to store equipment. A $6,000 donation was recently made by Nethella Woolsey and other townspeople have also made pledges. Committee members have asked for support from the community and will gladly consider suggestions or complaints. The committee hopes to use contributions to make needed improvements and rely on tax money for upkeep of the improved cemetery. Committee members are Thell Barney, Hilda Roundy, Walter Leibenguth, Stanley Haycock and Reed Wooley. |
